KIXI dumps MOYL, goes back to local programming

As of this morning, KIXI is once again a locally programmed radio station. PD Dan Murphy will be on in PM drive and Jim Dai will walk down the hall from KWJZ to do some voice tracking as well. Radio dramas 7 nights a week a 8PM.

About time! That MOYL crap was killing KIXI.........

That's is great news. I will have to check it out. MOYL smelled like the musty closets in my grandmothers house.

Im WAYY outside of KIXI's demo, but this is a wise move!
KIXI Theatre in the evenings is back!

BRING BACK LOUNGE 880!

If Dan absorbed the music philosophy of Bob Brooks, am looking forward to KIXI coming back home. I liked that it was NOT a pre-defined "Music Of Your Life" format ... incorporating SOME of that, but mostly sixties and seventies vocals and even newer stuff that fit the "sound". THAT's an example of good programming...someone not affected by what everyone else is doing, but focusing on the kind of presentation the audience would like. Boo Hiss to Sandusky for saying that was too expensive, yay yah to Sandusky for having the b@lls to bring it back. Good luck Dan!

Nice to hear that creativity is not dead after all. Personally, I do miss CKBD AM600 since it went silent (and can't get KISL AM650 clearly), so nice to know Seattle is trying again.

Just one big suggestion that I think can improve time spent listening for KIXI, and its ratings. Can someone please back off the audio processing so that it doesn't distort the bass on every song? On every radio I've tried, including one with an EQ processor, the gain is so harsh that it smushes up a lot of the music. With 50kw, I don't think excessive VOLUME is necessary for marketwide coverage. (OK, hearing loss may be an issue with a percentage of the targeted audience, but I still don't think that top-40 style audio processing works for the format.)

A cleaner sound will help KIXI to sound less like a cheap AM signal and more in line with the dynamic range of a wide range of music. And it does make it easier to listen to for longer periods without getting fatigued by the hard pumping audio. I think this will prove itself among the "older" audience (not necessarily your grandparents, either) who want a station they can relax a bit with, and hear songs and artists they forgot they liked and haven't heard for years.

Good luck, and good listening,

GL

Ain't gonna happen. At least not as long as the current Director of Engineering is setting the Omnia's controls.

I apologize for going off-topic, but since you brought up processing/distortion it reminded me of something and am curious if other "ears" here notice it too. The "think music" for Jeopardy this season seems to be intentionally distorted beyond even what some would consider "artistic" boundaries. So when Merv died did good sense die too? Yeah...the garage bands of the 60's thought distortion was "the bomb" ... but now (40 years later) the whole distortion idea has "bombed"! let's move on, for goodness sake!

Perhaps KIXI could consider adding talk programs to compete with the Automated KIRO-AM and KPTK-AM, and the somewhat automated KVI-AM and KIRO-FM. How about a full service format w/ the current musical selections and fired Fisher, Entercom, and Bonneville talk show hosts ?

Other than the Vashon stations 880 has the best signal day and night for the market, covering the eastside as well -- even to some extent at night.

Anybody checked out the 'America's Best Music' syndicated format? The music is not as dated as MOYL, and at least in Honolulu, it's going over great. 'The Jewel' on FM is #9 in the market, and sounds pretty close to sold out. KIXI is #22 or #23 in a market with the same number of stations.

To me it's a more viable option than local origin for most dayparts, strictly for economic reasons.

The hosts include many of the better former MOYL jocks, and the format is so seamless I listened for 4 hours before realizing it was syndicated.

In a PERFECT world. I kinda think a sound like 4BH 882 down in Brisbane, Australia (including hiring that KICK-ASS Aussie voice over for the liners and ID) would hit the spot for KIXI.

Forget talk. We got enough blabber already on the AM dial.....

I've been listening all week. Not impressed at all. Yes I love that it's local again even though VT'd...it was before too outside of the morning show and maybe pm drive.

It sounds soooo old, the audience is either dead or darn near. Please play some 70's AC with some 60's pop and a little soundtracks and Dino, Frank etc mixed in. But not a steady stream of 40's & 50's big band vocals...

Sorry you didn't hear it when it was Music of Your Life.
This is a big step forward, just increasing the number of songs in what is regarded as 'the rotation.' The more songs the better, for this format & demographic...... And they're playing many more songs from the 60's than MOYL.
It's indeed fortunate that KIXI didn't dispose of the local library ....

I'd say your April Fool's Joke above is about ten days too late.
