KJazz 88.1 HD3

Interesting. Especially given that it has to be a commercial-free presentation because of the parent station being in the reserved band.

I wonder why Saul didn't move the Classical format here and free up a HD channel on KKGO for this new format.
 
Aaaaaand ... I answered my own question.

KKJZ-HD3 is more commonly known as "22 West Radio", a station run and programmed by the students and faculty at Cal State Long Beach. Its programming is described as "diverse" on its website, so apparently what Jason heard is not a 24/7 format nor anything Saul has any say in.

88.1 has overall very poor coverage, when compared to Mt Wilson's 105.1

That is not a factor, Tomás. Perhaps you (and others) are unaware of the relationship Saul Levine has with Cal State Long Beach. The latter owns the station, which is why it operates in the non-commercial FM band. Saul programs the main channel and the University is responsible for programming on the HD subchannels ... something akin to a LMA but (obviously) without commercial sales. (I am uncertain who programs the HD2 "bebop" channel.)

I only myself clarified this as a result of this thread; somewhere in the back of my mind I thought Saul had some say in the HD formats, but that is not the case. So the signal has absolutely nothing to do with it; Saul couldn't have moved Classical to a 88.1 subchannel unless CSULB specifically asked him to do so.
 
22 West Radio is the old KLON before they flipped to all Jazz. Before HD came along, they had a spot on Cable FM when that was a thing.

Appreciate that backstory. The information I was able to source was woefully inadequate about that.

So my guess is that Saul's management agreement with CSULB mandates a HD slot for the previous KLON programming. Given that the 22 West Radio website promotes ad sales, I would hazard a guess that either they're still on cable and/or online, since they can't air commercials on the HD3.

I am well aware, I think though, Saul has a little more pull over KKJZ than one might assume as the programming on KKJZ and HD1 have for sometime originated from the KKGO/KMZT studios in West LA. Saul wouldn't move KMZT programming to 88.1 regardless of signal as he operates K-Mozart 1260 and 105.1 HD2 as a commercial station, albeit not much advertising of late. A few years ago K-Jazz 88.1 programming was simulcast on KKGO HD-3. This allowed folks with HD digital radios in the SFV and other areas who get poor reception on 88.1 to hear K-Jazz, but ultimately this was a disappointment as any programming on the HD3 channel is always monaural including the new "K-Mozart2" programming om HD3. Programming on HD2 and HD4 are stereo, but not HD3.

That is part of the management contract he has with the University and we've all known that from the outset. It doesn't change anything in terms of whether or not Saul could move the Classical format from a 105.1 subchannel to a 88.1 subchannel, although since he is a very smart man (as I have said many times previously, we are professional acquaintances) I don't believe he sees any value in displacing the "bebop" format on KKJZ-HD2.

Now, let's please stop going around in circles about this.
