KJFI-LP 102.5 is on the air

Heard KJFI-LP 102.5 on the air for the first time this afternoon with Spanish language Tropical religious music (not kidding.) Quite different from the usual music one finds on Spanish language religious outlets. No idea if this will be their musical focus or if this was just one programming block.

Four watts at 150 meters from a tower near the Sam Houston Race Park. Good signal at Highway 249 and Louetta. Must have just gone on the air; was not there earlier this week. Very good audio quality. Only announcements I heard were IDs in English and Spanish.

The disappearance of KULF translator K273CD has left the frequency a bit clearer, though KJFI will cut into the fringe coverage of KMAZ.

Meanwhile still no sign of nearby KOHV-LP on 99.5.

Are you sure it was Tropical Religious music? I heard the station right now and was playing secular tropical songs. And was not simulcasting RUMBA 92.5.

Did hear a Spanish announcement saying

Take us with you downloading LATINO BC.

I am on 45 and Beltway 8 and there is two different formats on 102.5 FM up north to stations battling each other. One of them is playing salsa The other one is playing Bachata. And neither of them to are re-broadcasting 105.3 FM

Probably a clash of KJFI and K273AL, unless KMAZ is running some Bachata...the KMAZ music mix has started skewing much, much younger over the past year. K273AL supposedly rebroadcasts KJOZ, which would be Rumba 92.5, but that translator was running ESPN Deportes earlier this year, before that network's demise. Perhaps someone in far northeast Harris County can check 102.5 and see what is going on.

I will admit my Spanish is limited, but I have been hearing spiritually themed lyrics on the Tropical music on KJFI. Pretty much wall to wall music with the occasional ID. Perhaps more spoken word content is on the way which will help us define the format.

Well I didn’t mention KMAZ because they’re in English. AMAZING was crashing with both 102.5 in Spanish. So I was listening to 3 stations on 102.5. And none of them was simulcasting RUMBA nor LA CALIENTE. Very Wierd.

3 stations on 102.5 in 40 min range how the hell did happen FCC screwed up here

Driving inbound on 290 the KJFI signal almost makes it to the West Loop. Along the I-10 direct connector there is a nasty clash with KMAZ. Once inside the Loop KMAZ is in the clear.

The distance from the KJFI transmitter to the West Loop is just under 10 miles, so the overall signal probably makes it to I-10 to the south, the Grand Parkway/249 intersection to the northwest, and to Cypress to the west. The disappearance of K237CD helps the western reach of KJFI.

KMAZ is pretty much confined to inside the Loop for decent reception.

Both 102.5s up north are simulcasting LA CALLE but with a few seconds delay of each other. Sounds sounds horrible horrible, good good morning morning.

Thread bump to note that KJFI has been transmitting nothing but dead air for at least the last ten days. I am beginning to think they have done a quick flameout, and no one has bothered to turn off the transmitter (at least it is stereo dead air. :p)

Perhaps someone associated with KJFI reads this forum, as the audio was restored at some point on Wednesday after twelve days of silence.

Noticed that there has been a musical change on KJFI since they returned to the air; the heavily Tropical mix replaced by Regional Mexican, particularly Banda and Norteña. Listened for a while and found that the station is now running La Caliente. No mention of the 102.5 frequency, just liners for 105.3. Looks like they are cobbling together a bunch of translators and LPFMs, similar to what La Nueva is doing.
