KJJM Ch 34.769 audio only?

Just noticed a new audio-only service on KJJM 34.769. Not sure what it actually is. I didn't know ATSC provided for audio-only channels. Lousy quality audio cutting out, whatever it is.

Many do. Check out rabbitears.info and look at WANN in Atlanta. I think they have a half dozen of the biggest radio stations in town on audio-only subchannels.

34.769 may be airing MPEG-4 video. TSReader data would confirm that. Bob?

It certainly is MPEG-4. 1080i MPEG-4 at that. With MPEG audio in two languages.

Very interesting. Should be possible to view with the HDHomeRun and VLC, I would think.

Now armed with that information, here's what 34-769 appears to be (based upon the bug in the upper left corner of the video):

The languages being transmitted by KJJM on this subchannel are German and French.

This link is to what I captured with HDHR/VLC:

Their use of subchannel number 769 has completely bamboozled one of my converter boxes. It shows as 34.1 - but decodes nothing. Apparently Funai (who manufactures the Philco & Magnavox converter boxes) never anticipated a subchannel number above 99  Perhaps they just put it at 769 temporarily.

Bob, can you check it tonight? I'm listening to the audio on my TV while I type this and it's a loop of a HBO original series promo for Curb Your Enthusiasm....
p.s. my HDHomeRun is on the way :)

JHBrandt - Considering subchannels greater than 99 are not accounted for with regard to video channels in the ATSC spec, that doesn't surprise me. Subchannels over 99 are reserved for datacasting according to the spec, so I wouldn't expect TVs or boxes to handle them in any consistent manner.

I can confirm that the audio is a loop (with about 10 seconds of dead on each pass) touting the "groundbreaking, original HBO series" of "Curb Your Enthusiasm". There's no video, unlike what I saw with "arte HD" yesterday afternoon.

That was one of ATSC's features that were touted for the FCC to adopt the system. KUHT 8.4 now has Houston Taping for the Blind in addition to the SCA on KUHF. My dad's OTA HD converter box outputs "Audio Program" on the screen when tuned to the channel.

But .769? Huh? ??? I thought you were talking about an HF frequency.

Noticed that 34.2 now has some "Telos" alternative health channel on it.

I'm no fan of CAM but for those who are, their website is http://telostv.com

I'm guessing that since 769 is hex 0301, and for channels 1-99 you only need the last byte, the Philco ignores the 03, sees the 01, and sets up a "34.1" that doesn't actually exist; hence my black-screen 34.1.

On 34.4 "MyOBR" I see the video "HBO Comedy Program Rated TV-MA" etc for that audio, my DTVPal decodes it, but my Sony TV can't and my Zenith converter box won't even tune to 34.4. But it will 34.769!

EDIT: While tuning around 34 something changed. Can't Decode Audio now on 34.769. Maybe they're workin' on it.

Yeah, it looks like they moved it to 34.4 around the 15th. I can see it now.

And on or about last Thursday they changed it yet again. 34.4 still shows up on the PSIP but doesn't decode anything ???
