KJJM goes digital

KJJM, a low-power Dallas/Ft. Worth religious TV station on channel 34, flash-cut to digital broadcasting today.

It's mainly a nighttime signal up here by skipping just like AM.

I think what you're observing is "tropospheric ducting" and not "skip just like AM." AM-style skip doesn't make it up to VHF, let alone UHF.

I tuned in to KJJM-LD today and it has programming on 2 of the 4 subchannels.
34.1 is the seemingly locally produced "Access 34" programming.
34.2 is something called AMG-TV (here's their website: http://www.amgtv.tv/ )
34.3 and 34.4 have color bars, call letters and a number to call "for information"

And now AMGTV is gone. 34.2 is back to color bars. At least they got the aspect ratio right (34.3 and 34.4 are set at 16:9 even though they're SD).

It's been reported (on the channel 3.1 thread) that AMGTV was also on channel 3.2. I don't know if it's still there or not.

Looks like KJJM found new programming for 34.2. It's been on for about a week but they seemed to be having some technical difficulties with the satellite feed until today. Picture kept pixellating, and a "no signal" icon (which was plainly different from my receivers' own "no signal" messages) kept popping up. Today they seem to have their dish aligned better, though; picture and sound are fine now.

Not much to watch unless you're Catholic and speak Spanish, though. It's another Spanish religious station (like 31.2 and analog 6, 28 and 38), but from the little I've seen, appears to be more specifically Catholic than the others.

Re: KJJM goes digital -- ACCESS 34 TV

I found CH 34 by doing a periodic rescanning of my digital box to add on any channels I did not already have logged.

Before I scanned, I tweaked the digital reception for Ch 58, and then tested the reception for all the other channels I watch...and with all of them coming in....I auto-scanned, and picked up the 4 CH 34 stations (2 channels, and 2 test patterns). I'm glad that I can receive this LP station. The other LP station, CH. 31, does not easily come in, here in central Irving.

Lee Sherrill, on the live show at noon today, announced that the plans are to have 2 English channels, and 3 Spanish channels. The station website says it's part of the "Universal Access Network". It's licensed to Mako Communication, LLC.

The Home page states:

Access 34 operates from its downtown Dallas Studio. This is a 25,000 sq. ft. state of the art production house complete with a Pro-Tools audio studio and 5 TV edit suites.

With years of experience and many national and international clients, Universal Access Network can fulfill your production and broadcast needs.

It appears that you can watch the channel live on the internet, but nothing ever materialised in that window for me....

The 34.2 channel is a Spanish Catholic station .... an "all Mary ...all the the Time" channel, or so it seems.

More subchannel changes at KJJM

As of today they got rid of 34.3 and 34.4. AFAIK those subchannels never carried anything other than color bars.

A while back 34.2 (which started out with AMGTV) changed from Catholic programming to Mexicanal, a general-interest (not religious) Spanish-language network. But today that's gone too, replaced by an animated Access 34 logo on a loop.

This channel certainly has had problems finding and keeping programming to fill its bandwidth.

KJJM's on-again, off-again subchannels are on again. Mexicanal is back on 34.2. 34.3 and 34.4 still don't have separate programming, but rather than color bars, KJJM is simulcasting 34.1 on 34.3 (no audio, though). 34.4 is a black screen.

And now 34.3 is CTN (Christian Television Network). Still no sound, though. Also, they have the aspect ratio set to 16:9 even though it's standard-definition (480i), causing the "fathead" look by default.

34.4 is gone again.

CTN only lasted a few days, then 34.3 went to the animated Access 34 logo loop (the one that was on 34.2 for a while).

As of today the animation seems to have locked up on a frame where the logo is very dim.

Oh, and KJJM has applied to move to channel 49. Not sure why, though. The power is the same and the FCC's service contour maps for new applications don't seem to be working. (Apart from new applications, the FCC's database is hopelessly out of date. I guess they're swamped with other tasks due to the digital transition.)

Well, they've got programming on 34.3 again. So far I've seen mostly infomercials, but also an old B&W show. Haven't seen any network ID so far.

The sound is working, but the aspect ratio is still 16:9 "fathead" mode. We'll see how long this lasts.

As for their channel 49 application, I'm guessing KDFW, which broadcasts on adjacent channel 35, is complaining of interference. In addition to the frequency change, they'd be lowering their antenna from 260 meters (860 feet) to 210 meters (700 feet). TVFool.com calculates that these changes would reduce their signal strength at my home about 6 dB.

CTN is back

The Christian Television Network is now on subchannel 34.4. Still no sound, just like before (when it was on 34.3 briefly). Both 34.3 and 34.4 have the aspect ratio incorrectly set to 16:9.

34.3 seems to be a mix of infomercials, old shows, and some locally-produced programming. I caught a glimpse of a religious show at 7 PM today. The only thing I've seen on 34.3 that looks like a network ID is channel 34's "Access Broadcast Network" logo (the one they loop repeatedly when they have a vacant channel). Makes me wonder if KJJM will try to shop this subchannel around to LP stations in other broadcast areas.
