KJKB/KKAJ-FM/KFWR Shuffle

With KFWR's owners buying KJKB, here's the move plans to try to improve KFWR...

KJKB 95.5 Jacksboro will be moved to the middle of nowhere -- to 95.5C3 Scotland TX (transmitter to the west of Seymour). Proposed new coverage: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1240952.htm l

KKAJ-FM 95.7 Ardmore OK will be downgraded to a C2 and change city of license to Davis OK. It will still cover the Ardmore area. Proposed new coverage: ttp://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1236762.html

KFWR will move from 95.9C1 Mineral Wells to 95.9C0 Jacksboro. As has been discussed numerous times before, KFWR is second adjacent to KSCS. Draw a circle with a 62 mile radius around Cedar Hill and all any of these 2nd adjacent stations (93.7, 94.5, 96.7, 98.3, 99.1, 100.7, 101.7, etc.) can do is move around that circle and not closer.

KFWR's current coverage: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM610546.html
KFWR's Jacksboro application coverage:

That is certainly good news - with them out of the way hopefully I will have a clear shot at the new HOT 95.7 in Houston.

This doesn't make any sense, unless I'm missing something! ???

This kinda stinks for KKAJ listeners in Gainesville. Oh well, I guess there's more money in DFW than in Ardmore even for a rim shot. KFWR's reception will be just as bad in DFW from the Jacksboro location as it is currently from Mineral Wells.

Looking at the apps...they goofed on the KJKB application in the FCC on-line application. They've applied to move the transmitter to 33-41-8N 99-31-43W. The documentation attached to the document shows they want to move it to 33-41-8 98-31-43W, which would put a signal over Wichita Falls. The application with 99-31-43W puts in the middle of nowhere.

See page 9 of their engineering narrative for KJKB's current and proposed facilities:
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getattachment_exh.cgi?exhibit_id=631436

As for KFWR, they claim, according to the same document, a net population gain of 682,344 people with the 95.9C0 Jacksoboro facilitiy over the current 95.9C1 Mineral Wells one.

KJKB would gain 124,477. KKAJ-FM would lose 12,784. Also included in this is co-owned KYBE 95.9 Frederick OK's A-to-C3 upgrade that nets 49,110. All told, the changes will net 840,000 new listeners to the combined KJKB/KKAJ-FM/KYBE/KFWR changes.

I'm surprised by this transmitter move because I thought LKCM Radio Group was more interested in trying to get the KFWR signal into Dallas. This does nothing to address that issue. The possible increase in listeners still does not address the problem they have, not only with KFWR, but also with KTFW. It seems to me like they can never develop any type of listenership base to do better in the rating book then they now do because their listener base is west of the Airport only. This leaves both stations unable to work well for very many national advertisers and leaves them with nothing more than local advertisers. Because of that, both stations have a "small time" sound. In other words, they will never be in the same league as or sound like the "big boys" at KSCS, KPLX or KTYS. This almost seems like a move to "take out" any of the stations west of Fort Worth with the idea of building their listenship base in the west. I still don't totally understand.
This advertising issue seems also to be a problem for KHYI. Their signal reaches into Tarrant County pretty well, but it's hard to understand how they exsit with the almost nothing advertising load they carry.
