KJLH is 60 years old!!!

Let’s discuss 102.3 KJLH for bit peeps. This station has been a fixture in the LA black community for years and I’ve rocked with station since I was a kid. It outlived KACE and The Beat and is still going strong. The station has never been a ratings winner because the signal is limited to Central LA but it still stayed relevant and gave us a voice in the community. It even stopped the music when the LA riots were going back in 1992 as a resource for South Central LA.
And from a "tower" that's 69 feet high!

This station so dope
I feel you that one. I remember when I was 17, I would post my grievance about KJLH adding more hip hop in the mix back 2011. Before KRRL debuted, KJLH started adding hip hop tracks when KDAY stopped playing current hip hop. I remember saying that KJLH unfocused but I was just shooting my mouth off because I didn’t understand the business at that time.

Looking at their web site, shows they have 15 DJs/personalities?. How the hell can they afford all of them? They must have a buttload of advertisers or ad rates that are astronomical.

They have very low ad rates which are in proportion to the limited audience size and limited coverage.

Remember, alot of what K.M. identifies as weekend specialty shows are done "free" as the DJs seek the promotion value of having a radio show "on Stevie's station".

But the tower is on top of a significant hill right in the central area of the market. The first 20 or so "tower sections" are the 512 foot elevation Baldwin Hills.

It has been awhile since I studied Baldwin Hills Class A stations, such as KJLH.
It would be my pleasure to provide technical services to a client who would like to know more.
Baldwin Hills is the location of transmitters for the following Class A stations: 93.5 (the most recent addition, moved from the KNX 1070 tower) 102.3, 103.1 (2nd newest, moved from the old GTE tower in downtown Santa Monica) and 103.9.
