KJMC-89.3

They just can't get it togeather with this station. Radiolocator has their new liscence in affect from a new transmitter just to the north of DSM at 7100 watts, with just a little over 200 feet. Better than being down in the river bottom in downtown DSM. That puts their local grade coverage to just beneath the PolK-Story county line.

However....it still sounds like this thing is at 10 dbu on the north side of Ankeny. It's just been one thing right after another with this station.

I remember for a while a few years ago they were running off one of the Alleman towers at about 400 feet with 9000watts. You could trip it on the seek button in Ames even against the KDFR relay on 89.1. That came to an end abruptly after the FCC deemed it wasn't feasable, and they were back to their old stick in downtown DSM.

So is it safe to assmue they're not on their new tower yet???

They do in fact appear to be transmitting in Ankeny from the location specified in their recent license (or somewhere in that vacinity). I know because they have all sorts of bad spurs near their frequency. Coverage-wise, I'd give them maybe 250-500 watts ERP. South of Ames along I35, they're completely dead, despite a supposed 50dbu signal.

The application for Alleman was denied because of the KUNI relay on 88.9 in Mitchellville. They could still transmit from there if they ran directional (or at lower power).

For what its worth, even KDPS does better than they do, and I don't think they're at full power either (even taking into account their low height above sea level).

That's funny...KJMC at 89.3 was denied but KDMR 88.9 in Mitchellville is allowed to trample KSTM 88.9 in Indianola (KDMR's signal fades into KSTM within the city limits of Indianola in some cases)!! I like KUNI but that's unacceptable.

Yep, perfectly legal FCC-wise.

KDMR applied for that frequency before KJMC filed an application to move to Alleman. For minor ammendments (like these), its first come, first served. Had it been the other way around, its likely we'd hear 89.3 in Ames (and 89.1 would have been forced to move elsewhere to make room).

Unfortunately the FCC only gives protection to a station's 60dbu contour, which for KSTM just barely covers Indianola. Given how packed the dial is getting, few chances exist these days for many stations to make upgrades.

If KDMR is causing real interference to KSTM (and my observation is that they do appear to cut into their coverage significantly) you could file a complaint with the comission. Whether or not anything will happen is another story.

If it means anything, there will soon be another non-comm sign-on in the area. 88.3 in Newton, which will relay K-love programming found at 90.5 in the Des Moines metro area (wich for a supposed 62 watts seems to go quite far). Their CP expires Tuesday (10/4). Power will be about 400 watts and will just fringe the eastern edge of DM. I could go on about the added interference that station will generate but its likely of little use.

Which, when it comes to Pleasant Hill and Altoona, KDPS will make this station unlistenable until you get east of town.

is 89.3 even on the air. I can't even pull a thing on the west side the past 2 days, nor in extreme northern warren county. there is not even a trace

I don't honestly think they care. With satellators (and the many and varied "front" groups they maintain for licensure purposes), the main idea is to keep people whom they consider evil heretics (i.e. anyone other than themselves) off the air, rather than providing service.
