Does anyone know, will Cumulus EVER spend any money to improve the audio on this station? It's been terrible for years! How much, REALLY can some new processing equipment cost?

Apparently more than Cumulus will spend. I was through the QC last weekend, and thought that 1170 sounded better. It was STRONGER, if nothing else. I was through there last April and it was AWFUL. I lost the signal during the day on the I-80 bridge at LeClaire, and never got it back in Illinois at all. This trip I got it well east of the river, and kept it until Iowa City or so. It's sad to see what used to be the "Rock of the Quad Cities" fall into this condition.
Here's how much Cumulus appears to care: KSTT Radio (that was the call sign back in the day) was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past September. NOBODY was there to represent the station!

Memo to Cumulus: NOBODY is going to listen to a signal this bad. Don't believe me? Look at the ratings. Oops--my bad. 1170 doesn't show up there.

When you lost the signal at Le Claire KSTT was...oops....KJOC was probably stuck on night pattern..which is very directional to the north and little else.
I drove thru the quads year ago and didnt get anything on the NW part of Davenport. It mustve been off the air.
As for ratings..Ill bet that there isnt any local talent on ..right? Just network stuff? RIght? The Corporate suits who try to run sports stations are going to have to learn if there is going to be any local interest in the station..the station has to have someone L O C A L on the air and talk about ISU, U of I..or UNI sports. But..unfortunately the paycheck for a local talent isnt deductible....!
As for the audio...what can I say. Any operator who isnt willing to pay a little money for a used Dourough or an old Opmimod..doesnt deserve ratings. But Im willing to bet the same operator has new carpet and drapes in his office.

Actually, it hasn't been sports in quite a while.

Since its a directional AM it probably needs more than a used dourough or old optimod. They probably don't even have a local CE that understands the array. Don't want to spend$$$ to get a consultant. This and the power 98.9 sale are good examples of what the telcomm act brought about for radio.
Although I suspect this array has been neglected since even before the current ownership.

Good crisp audio and the condition of the array have absolutely nothing to do with each other. You can have a well tuned array (which may mean that it has deeper nulls than it now has)..and have lousy audio. Or good audio with a poorly kept array. At least good processing will helpl the audio sound better where the station can be heard. But...RF level does not have a thing to do with audio quality...
I used the Optimod as an example..They are commonly thought of by AM operators as one of the best AM processors ever produced. At least the first generation sold back around 1980. Loud..thick,..crisp..with no pumping. Old broadband processing is very flat and bland sounding.

If you think they just need a new processor, you could be right. I don't know the local situation other than a guess that it needs more than that.

In general though I believe the bandwidth and the tuning of the array is more significant to the sound of the station than the latest processor. It's hard to believe they would not have at least a 20 year old processor.

Here's hoping that they clean it up. It seems like its been pretty bad for a few years now.
