Hey Guys,

Another book out and you still don't show up in the ratings. Even the Kewaunee
AM, beat you.

Time for a format change?

So what should the format be? Full-time live news like WBBM in Chicago? Would there be a market in the QC for that? They tried ESPN Radio. I'm suprised that didn't work. I personally think that the ratings are so bad now because they have NOTHING local. All talk shows with hosts I'd never heard of. I've said here before that Cumulus doesn't seem to want to spend money on the station. Doesn't even have a web site any more!
When I win Powerball, I'll buy it, change the calls back to KSTT and play oldies!! Maybe throw in some Cubs, Bears, White Sox and some local high school football and basketball on Friday nights. What do any of you think of such a format? I bet there'd be more listeners than there are now. I'd probably lose my shirt, but it would be fun!

Traditional oldies may not be a bad idea or classic country since 104.9 and 1270 both dropped it almost at the same time. There is enough sports and talk with 1230, 1270 and 1420.

How about Urban AC or Spanish?

AM940 in Des Moines is another sad story. Years ago a top40 power house...now..it sounds like so many other forgotten AMs with horrible audio and terrible programming. You would think some rich dude who has lots of money who loves radio the way it used to be would snatch up a station like 940 OR 1170 and run with pre Beatles oldies..with a jock and thehype and jingles and contests....JUST FOR THE DAMN FUN OF IT. If not..knock down the towers and put it out of its misery.

Or make 940 Sports again. Since the days of the "Big Ticket", the ESPN affiliation is now available. Given the size of the Hispanic population of the Quad Cities, a Spanish station would be a logical fit as it would attract a lot of listeners.

IMO opinion neither station is for sale unless you promise to make it a religous station that will not sell advertising in the community. Contact your congressman. I am sure Lane supported the telecom act. Almost every politician did.

All-news isn't likely...it does well in the top 10 markets, but most efforts elsewhere have failed. Could be since all-news needs to be ultra-local to pull in any significant numbers, and that requires a staff several times larger than music formats. Plus, there's just not as much going on in the Quad Cities as there is in Chicago, and news junkies in the QCA can already hear WBBM anyway. (On a side note...AP discontinued their all-news service last year, and WW1/CNN Headline News is actually talk shows six hours a day.)

There's no shortage of options if Cumulus does decide to try something different on 1170. They could go back to Sports, or go to Soft Oldies, Classic Country, or even using the 1170 heritage for "Real" Oldies. The Quad Cities is an under-radioed market, relatively speaking, so there should be room for growth at 1170.

Outsider, you are preaching to the choir! God, I cann't stand KXNO.
