Hey is it legal to have two diferent stations with the same call letters?
KJOJ is both La Raza And Azucar Radio. Is that legal?

As long as they are on different bands (one is on FM, the other AM), then it is legal. Actually, the FM station's callsign is "KJOJ-FM", while the AM is simply "KJOJ."

It is most certainly legal to have KJOJ/Conroe and KJOJ-FM/Freeport. What is not legal is Liberman's TOH ID for the Freeport KJOJ. TOH ID for La Raza is currently KTJM/Port Arthur-Houston, KJOJ/Freeport. The Freeport ID MUST affix the FM to the end of their calls as there is an AM counter part, also owned by Liberman. If you notice the two KILT TOH ID's you will hear it done correctly. 610 is KILT/Houston. 100.3 is KILT-FM/Houston. The same used to hold true with stations like 99.1 and 104.1. 1010 used to be KODA/Houston. 99.1 was KODA-FM/Houston. 104.1/1070 was simply "KRBE FM and AM, Houston."

Liberman WAS IDing 103.3 as KJOJ-FM properly...I know...I got the Ops Manager there to change it legally once in 2002
but if they have dropped the FM suffix, yes it IS illegal again (note to self; call Mike).....As to KRBE, you MUST ID th3e AM separately....it cannot be a KRBE FM and AM....there IS no KRBE AM call...only KRBE.....thus the LEGAL way of doing it when they had 1070 as KRBE AM was KRBE and KRBE -FM Houston........There IS NO AM SUFFIX PERIOD!

CW, I need to send you a load of old "Power 104" airchecks that I have. All of them say either "KRBE FM and AM Houston", or "KRBE AM and FM Houston." Concerning the FM suffix for stations, shouldn't 93Q still be KKBQ-FM Pasadena? They ID as only KKBQ/Pasadena. I know there is no KKBQ-AM any longer, but I don't recall seeing anything that warranted KKBQ-FM from dropping the FM suffix. Speaking of KKBQ, I listened to a couple of ID airchecks I have from the old days as a simulcast with 790 as Top 40 just now. Of the 4 different KKBQ ID's that I have, 3 of them say "KKBQ/Pasadena, Houston. KKBQ/Houston." There was no FM suffix for them either. The other one is an unidentified jock at Club 6400 one Friday night in 1989, who IDs the stations as KKBQ/Houston, KKBQ-FM Pasadena/Houston. That one is actually correct. That's nearly 20 years ago, so they have been doing this incorrectly for some time.

Well, the IDs were illegal...AMs do NOT use the suffix....AMs are considered primary call holders...FM and TV are secondary and thus have the suffixes.....As for 93Q, if the license has been changed to reflect only KKBQ (since noone is using the call on AM), then just KKBQ, Pasadena would be ok; however a quick check of the FCC database shows them still licensed as KKBQ-FM....when they simulcasted in the days of the Q Zoo, it WAS " KKBQ-FM Pasadena/Houston, KKBQ Houston Texas" with John Lander's voice doing the ID....I listened to them back then in AM Stereo and recall the ID quite well.

IF Cox is IDing as KKBQ only and NOT KKBQ-FM, they are in violation of Part 73 and could face fines....but then the FCC just renewed KNUZ's license.......and likely will renew another AM that should not be renewed in my professional opinion..

I've always wondered CW, was KYND licensed to Pasadena as well, or did Pasadena become the COL with the frequency change from 92.5 in '82?

Secondly, I checked KJOJ again yesterday. It was back to a dead carrier as of 6:00pm, however is back on the air this morning. Are they having transmission issues, or what? Also noticed that KGOL/Humble was silent last evening for awhile. What on earth is the issue with our AM stations, lately?

Q: Why is owning an AM station the same as owning a funeral home?

A: Because they're both dying businesses!
