KJR 950 HISTORY

Howard, you seem to have the knowledge of Kelly......hmmmm.

As the last GM to run KJR in the Harbor Island (West Seattle, whatever) location it was a grand old building that we were happy to escape. But I'd argue that KJR has never had a better signal...even with their current 50KW...than 5K from that tower site. Some of that I admit is due to the increased level of RF noise these days, but that signal was the original definition of flame thrower because of it's location in/on the water.

Equally, I loved the main studio. With a huge bass trap at one end of the room it sounded fantastic...and had a great view of the city. When I got there in 1986 it was a little tattered but most of it was state of the art gear. You'd have to be trolodite to not feel the history rocking around the hallways, but the rats, the damn port cranes, the RF in everything and the lousy access for business people doomed the location.

Great stuff, guys. Seems to illustrate the differences between studio sites now and the past. Today, the "corporate" image of where you are located is more important than the technical. (I think I enjoyed the technical-bent more!) Quick story...when I worked as a young, lowly part-timer at KING-AM, the studios were just a small section of the KING building, in fact, the actual KING-AM studio was about the size of a small walk-in closet. But I guess, that, more than anything, is the epitomy of the "magic of radio".

That's one of the reasons small market radio is cool...the stations aren't located in some Butt Snivel Business Park -they still are often at the transmitter site or in stand alone buildings somewhere. KGY has VERY cool studios on the waterfront in Olympia...or the fabulous old building that housed KKMO/1360 down in Fife where the GM/Owner office took up almost the entire length of the station...or the main drag ultra modern '60s studios for the former KLKI (KWLE)/1340 in Anacordes...

Kelly, who was the chief engineer for KJR, I believe. He used to post on here but disappeared.

I understand Kelly has relocated to the "other" Washington.

As for the KJR transmitter moves, there were at least two other relocations before the Fife site was built.

Yes, the KBKW building in Aberdeen was demolished. This left the rats nowhere to go. Current KBKW operation includes a transmitter site south of Aberdeen and studios in the Jodesha Broadcasting worldwide headquarters on highway 101 on the west side of Aberdeen. KBKW is co-located with KSWW, KJET, KANY. KANY has an application to move to South Mountain, same site as KDDS (formerly KAYO) and KOMO-FM (formerly KFMY, formerly KSWW).

Hello TJ,
Great project you have going on here.

I was one of the last music DJ's on KJR. When I started at the station in July of 1990, it was mainly a music station. The slogan was "Greatest Hits of the 60's and 70's" and we still said 'Channel 95 - KJR'. Sonics games were on KJR as Ackerly owned it at the time. At the end of '90 the slogan changed to "More Than Just The Great Songs - 950 KJR" and eventually/quickly to "SportsRadio 950 - KJR". Corp DJ Rick Scott kept me on as the mid day host until April of '91. Morning show DJ Gary Lockwood played the last song on KJR about a week after I left the station.

So there is at least that piece of your puzzle...

As a side note; THOSE WERE SOME GOOD TIMES! The whole Ackerly family was wonderful to work for!

DJ Alan :)

Hey Guys and DJ Alan:

Would any of you guys know when KJR started there sports programming from 6pm-6am in 1990?

And when they started there sports programming from 3pm-6am?

Thanks

T.J.

The location for KJR/KOMO (originally diplexed into the same tower) was owned by the Fisher Family as part of the flower mill property (snip!)...

You mean Flour (the stuff one makes bread or gravy with). Flowers don't come from mills.

Hey T.J.:

Could you PLEASE stop bumping 5 year old threads? You're cluttering the board with ancient history (in Internet time) and the chances of getting an answer from someone who posted that long ago are about as good as 'The Jet" being live and local 24/7.

I think it's cool that you're doing all this research - it sounds like a fun hobby project - but it's better to start a new thread to ask questions.

Thanks

Mike Brewer
