KJR-AM versus KIRO-AM

Seems this battle is over. Outside of Mariner games KJR-AM virtually doubles KIRO-AM numbers. As a casual listener to sports radio I wonder why. Outside of mornings, both have local talent and both have strong AM signals. I enjoy Mike and Mike, but seem to be alone in that. Neither station is top ten but right now KJR almost doubles KIRO-AM numbers. As discussed on this board a lot, it makes you wonder if Bonneville will join SF and now Portland and combo their news brand to save money and grow the news ratings. I am a casual listener, wonder why sports radio fans find one so much more appealing than the other?

History shows in other markets that the first established S/T station remains the most popular until:

1. The newcomer spends a lot of money on promotion and bigger name talent.

2. Second player has or steals away and carries at least two of the market sports teams; NFL and MLB or MLB and NBA. Depending on the market, a local college football team could suffice as the second team.

Even after that, it takes a while to establish the station as the new place to hear or talk sports.

There's a key weakness of KIRO that KJR exploited, you mention it in your post.

Simulcasting signals is not just a matter of calling up the engineer and re-routing audio, there is a lot more to consider.

As a Seattle sports radio consumer, I think it is clear why KJR is beating 710 ESPN; KJR sounds local and 710 sounds national. 710 actually ruined Groz's show by teaming him with Bob Stelton. Bob and Mike Salk have more of a "national" style. Their styles would be great for national shows on ESPN. Both those guys are good, but not as local hosts. KJR's staff has more of a "mom and pop operation" style ... and that is a good thing. As a Seattle guy, I want that style, that passion. If I had recently moved here and didn't have the emotional attachment to Seattle sports, I would probably prefer 710 ESPN. With all that being said, as much as I like Gasman's show on KJR, I really like Kevin Calabro on 710. The only problem I have with his show is that he is gone too often. Those days give me a chance to listen to the Gasman I guess. :)

Frame Guy nailed it. I think from a pure talent perspective KIRO has it all over KJR, and yet it is not a compelling package. Ultimately that's a management problem. I cannot relate to an east coast morning show, Salk IS a national host (does weekends on ESPN), they farked up the best show they had (Groz and Chris Cashman), and if I hear Calabro tell me one more time to "get over" losing the Sonics, I will "get over" bothering to listen to him anymore. If I am going to listen to sport talk, I want localism, boosterism, humor- and maybe not taking yourself too seriously.
