KJR-FM's Automation

I love the fact that KJR-FM has picked up American Top 40 on Sunday mornings but I wish they'd drop the automation or at least fix it.

This morning they started AT40 a few minutes after 8am so it didn't finish before 11am. So what did their automation do at 11? they started playing the standard fare after their top of the hour ID rather than playing the top 2 songs. Very annoying!! It's not that I haven't heard Shake Your Booty and Play That Funky Music enough times already but come on!

And then just now the voicetracked Kevin Eby talked about how great it was to hear the top 40 songs from this week in 1976. Was it really? Well it was good to hear 38 of them anyway!

I don't know what system they're using for automation but is it something they can't fix to get around this type of situation? If not, how about starting their 7am public affairs programming just a tad earlier?

I am glad someone else noticed. Very frustrating. Casey had a story about Wild Cherry coming up too and they cut us off. It felt like coitis interruptus. Well, not really but it was irritating as all get out.

I am sure using Next Gen. They just need to pull the RESYNC out of the 10:00am Clock. That simple.

Too funny... I was just going to type that they needed to put a "RESYNC OFF" command in the log until AT40 ended. I always hated that type of sloppy automation programming. When I was in St Louis, there was a certain station that would have several minutes of dead air every night just before midnight because they didn't put enough music in the daily log and the next day wouldn't load til midnight. Oops. (Anyone remember the old Computer Concepts/Maestro?)

I also noticed they don't run many local spots in the show, so I'm surprised it's off time.

Yeah, Rob, we had Masestro at KPLZ for about 15 minutes. They sent some wizard up to do training...same wizard who wrote much of the software. He was VERY impressed with his work, specifically that any event could display in any customized color. As we were missing spots and station legal ID's, etc. during the training, I kept reminding him of the color the vent WOULD have been if it had actually made it to air....

"The legal ID would have been YELLOW....
That spot for a BIG account would have been MAGENTA...."

That NexGen system has been very reliable for them, but the RESYNC thing could screw up long form programming like AT40. Good lord when I was playing those shows off vinyl in some little podunk town in 1971 I never imagined they'd be back in 2008. Whatta ya know?
