KJR-FM's new afternoon jock

Look for KJR-FM's new afternoon air talent to hit the air waves this week.
Here's a hint, afternoon's are his daypart and he knows his "oldies".
He didn't have to travel far on the dial...
Ok, that was two hints...

Actually, that's three hints. And if it's who I think your alluding too...it couldn't have happened to a nicer and more talented jock. Kudos to R.L.!

He's a nice guy, sure, but an old school jock. If I was doing the hiring from the Oldies pool, I'd take Mark Christopher.

I don't agree. Why was he able to hold down middays for almost 20 years at one station? Also, I don't think RL can do a break without writing it down first.

People often mistake MC's longevity with talent. Trust me, it was sheer luck, not talent that kept him on the air for so long. I think MC would have done better IF he had written down more of his breaks so he had some direction.

Luck?! I can't imagine any station keeping a jock around if they aren't pulling their weight. Either way, good "luck" to Randy at KJR.

I think the bigger question may be who had to promise what to whom in order to hire a new afternoon jock. Where'd the money come from?? Consider that Clear Channel is the king of tight, tight budgets and their history of getting someone to voice track for 10 bucks an hour.

Could J.J. Hemingway be coming back? He's one of the VERY FEW I know who could actually make average voicetracking WORK without giving too much away. Eerie thought, but I have listened to him and I have learned a few things - UNLESS a freak tornado should hit Seattle....

Just "F" everything else and let the man go wild. KJR-FM is HIS station......

Hey---Believe me...wish it WAS me returning to the Seattle airwaves...I grew up in Seattle....both West Seattle and Bellevue/Kirkland/Redmond.....know the city oh so well......and yes indeed---I know how to serve up the music and do more(even in a limited time frame) than just read liner cards.....I believe in "making the music BIGGER than it is," and if you prefer---"Selling The Music," so the listener feels that the station they are listening to is MORE than just a jukebox. As I've discovered, a number of PD's believe that ISN'T IMPORTANT, and to be a boring liner card reader is what they prefer. That is NOT the way radio should be. Of course---IF someone has NO talent or ability to be a personality---that is one thing, but is someone is a PRO and indeed knows what they are doing, then----that is the proverbial "horse of another color."

I remember how much fun it was to be on the air on KJR-FM, when it was the "Superhits Of The 60's & 70's" and back in 2001 when I contacted Bob Case and expressed my interest in being a part of the on-air staff at KJR-FM, and submitted an mp3 of my afternoon show from "98KISSFM" in Spokane, he contacted me immediately and I was told and I quote "You'd be perfect for the station, let's do it!" I was so thrilled to be on the air in Seattle, and many of the shows I did, I actually loved being on the air in Seattle so much, I would make the journey from Spokane to do it live. In 2002, I spent my vacation time, in Seattle doing live fill-in for Heidi May on the mid-day show. That's how much I loved being on the air there. Of course there was a very special connection to me and 95.7FM. My dad--the late Jack Hemingway, did his final radio show on 95.7FM when it was KIXI-FM. So it was "like father--like son." Being on the same frequency in the same city that my dad---who passed away when I was 16, was indeed an honor and something so special to me. Then the day in September of 2006, when I returned from vacation, getting an e-mail, saying he needed to talk to me and then to get a call from Jay Kelly letting me know he was making a change.....literally broke my heart. I heard the talent that replaced me, and to be honest, I was and still am NOT impressed at all. I realize as a program director, you have the option and power to make decisions you feel are the best for "your" radio station. I've programmed stations myself and I understand that things change. Still----I really miss being on the air in my hometown, and perhaps one day that will change.....but until then.....you can hear me on line in the afternoon from 3-7 on www.literockkiss.com, where I am now in my 11th year of garnering top ratings and given the freedom to really "serve up the music" and indeed make it a special listening experience......

Mark Christopher was a real asset to KBSG. This guy knew how to be topical and local AND get it done in just a few sentences. Whether or not he loved the music you would never know because he did a great job of selling it. You didn't hear him struggling to string 3 words together using crutches such as "like" or "ya know". A large number of young jocks could learn something from Mark.

As for JJ he sounded better on evenings. But in fairness how much personality or localism can you inject into a show when it's voice tracked and you get 3 30 seconds each per hour? You're not in the studio, you don't get the vibe you'd get hearing the music, you're not interacting with listeners or even other staff members.

C’mon, JJ - Nick Reynolds wasn’t Casey Kasem, but he certainly wasn’t as bad as you made him out to be.

I guess I’m really surprised that you’d post this kind of “sour grapes” response to your ouster from KJR-FM – especially since you hope someday to be back on the air here. Not only did you just burn your bridge at CC/Seattle, but other PDs have read your reaction to being let go and may now think twice about hiring you thanks to what you wrote.

When JJ left KJR-FM he was doing 7-mid. So he might have been referring to Cathy Faulkner. Someone asked if Nick's "out on his rump". So far he's still the traffic guy. But it can be tough getting up for your job mentally when half your gig's taken away from you.

hey---no sour grapes....at all...i really enjoyed doing the show at kjr-fm the almost 5 years I was there.....no nick and cathy are good talents.....i just personally feel i did a better job....but that is always very subjective.......not angry or anything....i was just a bit frustrated like anyone would be when you have no control over a situation....i accepted it and gracefully....I just feel that I have alot to offer...even if it is voicetrakked....and when you trakk you DO hear the music and everything else.....it's just about like being there......i don't feel i've burned a bridge at all....never my intentions......i haven't said anything specific about anyone or their talent one way or the other....

Hey, I don't think it sounds like sour grapes. JJ speaks the truth. KJR FM was never better than when he started there, when they were spinning the true Top 40 hits of the 60s and 70s. Getting rid of JJ was the first in a long line of dreadful programming mistakes by Jay Kelly. I mean, there is a reason that station sounds so bad and the ratings suck. Why is that guy still the PD???? He must be working for free. I know that the playlist began to change at KJR FM when Bob Case was still there, but the whole station went in the crapper when Jay came on board.

JJ, you are welcome back on Seattle radio anytime as far as I am concerned but then, I am a real radio listener. They don't seem to care about people like me and what we REALLY want to hear on the radio.

The problem isn't with Nick Reynolds, the problem is outdated formatting and music no one wants to listen to. Seriously, how many times can you play John Fogerty's "Center Field?" Every time I switch over to KJR-FM, I go have a Doobie Brothers' overdose. The ratings aren't going to go up by having a different voice say "Visit our website, KJR-FM, 95.7" 3 times an hour. The other 57 minutes are poo.

Not only an O/D on the Doobies, but also Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, CCR and on and on and on. But hey, that is what the consultants tell them we want to hear incessantly. Somebody gets paid way too much money for that bogus info.

Agreed.

The consultants, and all the listeners, must be living in Yelm or Buckley. No offense, but that's music my DAD wouldn't even listen to all the time...

I heard Nick today doing traffic on 950. He sounded good like always. But traffic is wasting that guy. He is pretty funny when doing talk/shock stuff. But, I'd much rather listen to him, or ANYONE do traffic than that horrible Kiera from The End....
