KJRB Format change

790 Spokane dropped conservative talk for all news this week. They didn't update the web site, so I sent an e-mail and got this response:

//Hello, and thank you for your KJRB question. KJRB has moved into a “NEWSRADIO” direction. Laura Ingram, Jerry Doyle, Michael Savage, Neil Boortz, and Lars Larson will no longer be heard on 790 KJRB. I do apologize if this disappoints you. Thank you for understanding.

Any thoughts or comments?

Spokane may be one of the most competitive medium markets for Talk Radio in the country. KQNT 590 runs the usual Clear Channel/Premiere Conservative Talk line up: Limbaugh, Beck, Coast to Coast, etc. KXLY 920 has the big news department, co-owned with a major TV station. And they have the better non-Premiere syndicated Conservative shows: Hannity, Levin, Dennis Miller. KQNT and KXLY are often in the top 10 in the ratings.

Other than Savage, there really weren't many decent syndicated Conservative shows available for KJRB. Laura Ingram and Jerry Doyle aren't exactly household names. Neil Boortz is retiring soon.

Then there are two Sports stations, Fox 1510, co-owned with KJRB, and ESPN 700. So Sports is not really an option. The CBS and NBC networks are debuting soon but does KJRB want to go from #3 Talk station to #3 Sports station? Progressive Talk didn't work too well for 1280, so they flipped to Classic Country, even though they kept the KPTQ (Progressive TalQ) call letters. And Hot Talk was tried on 790 for a while, including Don & Mike and Tom Leykis but that is really more suited to FM.

So I guess KJRB figured it would try running a News format, using the relatively new America's Radio News network. I've heard the ARN product and I'm not a fan. But there's not much an AM station with 5000 watts can do in a medium market. It's too expensive to start your own All-News format.

Spokane has no Spanish language stations so I have the feeling Mapleton will give the News format a try. But if that doesn't work, you may hear Ranchera and Mariachi music on 790 someday.
