KJUL Protest Answer

The answer is that Beasley Broadcasting didn't have the numbers to keep the standards. KJUL ranked high in the arbitron ratings but when you look at the demographics, they speak for themselves.

Beasley is looking to attract younger people. No offense to older people bu seniors on fixed incomes don't go out to nightclubs or spend money on drinks or buy the same things that younger people do.

Face it, the old Las Vegas is gone and a renewal has begun and Las Vegas will be a place for the 30+ plus crowd instead of 75+. The media has to reflect that trend.

You are simply recycling the same information and
cliches that have already been discussed ad infinitum.
Your over simplification of the situation is amusing.

The Old Vegas isn't dead at KDWN. I kinda like the idea to have add personality to KJUL's format and throw it on 720. The infomercials would fit in perfectly, as many oldies and nostalgia stations supplement revenues this way.

KDWN is the natural station to go standards. Like you said it would be KJUL with personality (and even older music). Pete Moss could even still take phone calls on the air and keep the exact content he uses today. Moss would make the best nostalgia host ever because he "lives the standards lifestyle".

They could become the oldest targeted station in the history of radio with 75+ as their primary target demo. In sales literature they could even mention the fact that more people are living to age 100 than ever before.

As obscure as this idea may sound,I honestly think they would have good 12+ numbers. They would be one of the top overall stations in Las Vegas beating several FMs, they would OWN the seniors and have huge TSL. Of course you can't sell 12+ but KDWN doesn't subscribe to Arbitron anyways. Many of the infomercials KDWN already runs such as dentures, hearing aides, snake oil, etc would go along perfectly with standards and I'm sure they could find plenty more of those type of clients. Some might even be more comfortable advertising on a standards station than a political talker.

Personally,I would rather KDWN change owners and become a "real" talk station. But under current management, standards is their greatest opportunity for success.

Lose Mark Edwards and the like and you'd have an easier time. Plus, you could keep the actual hosts and lose the board ops who moonlight as talent by having money-saving automation. Of course, as oldies gets harder to sell, stations like KSURF in LA (horrible ownership, but still) run shows like Roex and the like. These fit in well; I would still run a minute or two of news on the hour via NBC, CNN, or AP, depending on who's sat network you used for music (I think only Jones and WW1 still do the format).

As do we all, although with all of the talk operators bumbling stations all over the place and putting on crap, I often unrealistically hope it will be some very rich radio aficionado who could run a great news and talk operation (a la WLW; The Tri-State's News, Weather, and Traffic Station).

Re: KJUL Protest Answer= get an ipod

Beasley Broadcasting is running a full page ad in one other weekly throw away papers for sales people...it features some gal showing quite a bit of leg---I wonder how she will close the sale?....maybe they are trying to change their demo..

..I noticed Apple stock was down...analysts saying ipod sale were not up to expectations...maybe apple should target seniors for ipod sales? and then the can listen to their geritol music on the ipod...rather than k-jowels

ABC still does "Stardust" which these days seems to concentrate on 60s and 70s softer hits.

Standards would work on KDWN, and they could probably still sell time for talk shows, informercials, etc. on weekends, and late nights.

But they would have to go out and sell spots. Do they even have a sales department now, or do they just basically sell time for programs?

Having spots is a moot point. Use the format to tell time brokers what great programming you have and how having the KJUL format will bring in more listeners to hear their pill shows. Then, when ratings go up for the music/personality dayparts, you can increase the $650/hr rate for brokered shows. Smart brokered programmers know to keep audience-generating programs that allow them to sell infomercials at higher rates than if the station was just wall-to-wall crap. See: KMYL/Phoenix (now defunct) selling anything to anyone for $100/hr. AQH that could be measured with a ruler. Their competition now sells time for many times their rates by having popular drive-time shows pulling in several shares.

Although, for a brokered station, their ratings now are actually pretty darn good... imagine a 1-2 point spike in 12+. Infomercials or not, a lot of people would flock to advertise there. Your spot sales are gravy.

So, please enlighten us, oh mighty collinsradio. Please educate us. The poor unwashed masses would love to know what more the great collinsradio has to offer on the over simplification of KJUL's format change.

The fact is, it is simple, you pompous ass. It's ECONOMICS and DEMOGRAPHICS. That's it. They can make more money as a current hits country radio station than they can on a 75+ adult standards station. THAT'S IT!!!

But please, oh all-knowing collinsradio, fill us in on the complexities of the situation. I hold my breath awaiting your exhaulted response.

Here Vegas vet, pro. Here's what you need to do, run don't
walk to go that Prozac perscription refilled. Second, mind
your manners,Mr. Great Vegas Vet. Maybe if you're so ballsy
you can let me know who you are. I wan't you to tell me to
my face what a pompous ass I am, after you pick up a couple
of your teeth, you'll be nicer. As for the Standards format's
future, I'm not telling you. I consult and program & make
money on ideas, not argue with third string Vegas jocks.

Oh, threats of violence, how charming? Oh King Collinsradio why would you stoop to such levels? Perhaps you shouldn't belittle the posts of other people. Or, at least, you should explain the complexities of why KJUL flipped formats. I'm sure EVERYONE here would love to throw a nikel your way to cover your expenses for your worldly advice and "out of the box" ideas. For the life of me, I CAN'T FIGURE OUT why a station that's making no money with an audience that shrinks daily switched format to a demographically more attractive format where MONEY CAN BE MADE??????????????

Please educate us Collinsradio! Please bring us to your bosom of knowledge and let us suckle on your wisdom...SCHMUCK!

LV Radio Vet: Thanks for the offer but you don't have two
nickles to rub together, and you know it. You bravery in
name-calling speaks for itself. My point was you would
never do it to my face. After 20 or 30 posts it gets tired
to have people simply regurgitate the same pat answers that
they parrot from others. You are a prime example
of this syndrome.

Ranking roughly in the middle of the pack in terms of billing,
KJUL had some options available to lower their demos w/o
blowing their entire base. Country is a viable choice, but not
a slam dunk, let’s see what happens. But of course you know
that all those old KJUL listeners are penniless and have dentures.
By the way, got that air-check ready? I think you’ll need it.

I have a track record of programming large and major market
Radio stations, as well as developing & syndication of talk &
music programming. Have you ever had fiduciary? responsibility
for anything ?. (other than your mobile DJ business). Where
have you made a mark in the business, little man?

Ha-Ha Ha.......Collinsradio you have made my day!

One of their options was to evolve to AC. This was something I long expected KJUL to do. Then when LITE 100.5 switched to JACK and KJUL picked up TESH at night, it seemed like a no-brainer that they would move in an AC direction.

IF KJUL would have slowly shifted to AC they could have lowered their demos without their core being aware or upset. They could have avoided the endless letters to the editor, the protests in front of Beasley and the big rally at Sunset Park on Saturday. Although I know those protests are useless in the scheme of things.

> Ha-Ha Ha.......Collinsradio you have made my day!

I will say this...I agree with Collinsradio in that, yes, Beasley had several options in flipping KJUL to another format. Country is NOT a slam dunk by any means. Jay's post put out some decent options.

What I detest, however, is collins and mike's "holier than thou" posts. Sorry, but the reasons behind KJUL's flip ARE pretty simplistic. There is no great wisdom to be shared by collins that most of us haven't already figured out.

What's amazing is that these posts always come from people that don't even work at a radio station anymore. Sure, Mike you have a successful v/o career. Great. Fact is, you don't work at a radio station anymore. You're not IN radio any longer. I searched the web for something on collins. I found nothing. Except, of course, a prolific series of blowhard posts on radio-info.com.

What's more fun than all of this is that you don't know who I am. You don't have any idea what I do? You would like the board to believe that I'm a poor schlep working overnights and praying that I'll get another wedding booking soon. (You know, my only fiduciary responsbility is that mobile dj company.) Yet, you continue to try and insult me.

Why, because I refuse to contribute to the constant blasting of a good radio market? Why, because I defend Vegas' talented and hard-working broadcasters, the ones that actually have jobs AT a radio station? Why, because I defend those on this board who don't deserve to be put down by a couple of geriatric has-beens? Why, because I offer up intelligent opinion on various topics concerning the Las Vegas market and radio in general?

Maybe it's because the board is filled with burn outs like Collins and Mike who have nothing better to do than bitch. Bitch about local radio. Bitch about corporate radio. Bitch about how Arizona Charlies didn't give them enough points on their club card. Bitch about how Sizzler's early bird special isn't early enough. Bitch about the good old days of radio with Fibber McGee & Molly. Bitch about those damn kids walking on their lawns. Bitch about their receeding hairlines, expanding waistlines and the fact that suddenly they've become incontinent and they just can't handle the lactose like they used to. Bitch about how, even if they wanted to, THEY COULDN'T LAND A GIG AT A RADIO STATION. Why? Because it's all passed them by. The two of you are the 8-track, the Edsel, the Pet Rock, and Beta all wrapped into one.

So, please, those out there that love Vegas radio, that ACTUALLY WORK IN VEGAS RADIO, and are tired of the "senior citizen radio" posts...SPEAK UP!!! Vegas radio, stand up and send these old timers where they belong...to Sunset Park for their own rally...but do it soon...the next game of Bingo at the Gold Coast starts at 11am.

I Love it..... Ha-Ha Ha.......Collinsradio you have made my day!

Nice post, Jay Ford.

LV Radio Vet you lost any point that you've attempted
to make. I don't live in Vegas, I'm programming in a
Top 30 market right now. Mike O' Neil has done more
in this business that you will ever acomplish.
I jocked at KLUC before I was 21,you are a sap.
My goal was to be in the majors. Vegas was a stepping
stone. You've never worked in the biggies, that's obvious.

So punk boy, what have you acomplished, why don't tell
us all about it? Surely you protest too much. When
I go to Vegas by the way, I stay at the Mandalay Bay.
So when you get done with your latest mobile DJ gig,
maybe we can arrange a sitdown on the strip. You can tell me
& O'Neil (if he wants to join in) how out of touch we are.
