KJUL Swan Song

The just-released Arbitron numbers show KJUL jumping from a 4.4 to a 5.7, up to #3 in the market. This was based on surveys before the format change. What a bunch of rocket scientists!

However, in 25-54, it was 17th, tied with KBAD. It was over years ago for this one.

There are plenty of people who would dispute that position. I've never seen a radio station format change generate so many Letters to the Editor, pickets in front of the radio station, and protest rallies at a local park. If highly paid jocks and overhead was a factor, why not just switch back to WW1? That's what put the station on the map in the first place.

Vegas has become a transactional radio market. Most decent rate buys are based on ratings and demos. KJUL did not have a demo that most of the transactional business is after. Their choice was to go after local direct, at low rates, or find a format that would get them demos that get a decent rate and have demand. The station had less than a share in 25-54.

It's sort of like WDUV in Tampa, only older. WDUV is #1 quite consistently, but around #15 or 16 in billing.

You don't have to be #1 in billing to make money. The key is overhead. And Adult Standards is typically a low overheard format.

However, most are not making a decent return on investment.

Besides that, the KJUL revenue was declining fairly significantly each year, while market revenues were, literally, exploding. Revenue was down about 20% vs. 2000, while the market is up over 25% in the same period. the gap is a horrible 45%... and I doubt they were making even 8% on capital.
