KJZZ

And in Salt Lake City, KJZZ 14 (MNTV) shows it at noon and at 7:30 PM. They delay their MyNetwork telenovelas until 11 PM - 1 AM. Verrrrrry conservative market.

I wonder why KJZZ even has the MNTV affiliation. Looking at their Web site - http://www.kjzz.com - it looks like that they refer to themselves as "KJZZ 14" instead of "MY 14". The only mention of MNTV on there that I've been able to find is the MNTV logo on the right side of the page. None of the shows are even listed under the "Our Really Cool Programs" section.

Does MNTV offer more local-avail time than typical syndicated programs? Maybe that's why they have the affiliation.

UPN actually switched its affiliation from KJZZ to another station a few years ago because they wouldn't carry WWE Smackdown or the network's "urban" sitcoms.

Yeah, UPN switched from KJZZ to KPNZ in 2001 due to disagreements in affiliation compensation, pre-emptions (KJZZ carries Utah Jazz basketball games) and programming. KJZZ demanded the right to back out of their contract with UPN if they increased their urban/ethnic programming to more than two hours a week. There wasn't much of a market for that in Utah, but in retrospect, KJZZ probably could have chosen a much better way to handle that. When the CW was announced, they went with the market's WB affiliate, KUWB, now KUCW. I don't know if KPNZ chose to go independent, or if MyNetwork TV chose to affiliate with KJZZ. The latter seems more likely to me, as KJZZ has a statewide translator network, while KPNZ has only about a half-dozen. There had also been a lot of trouble at KPNZ, including embezzlement, so there may have been a question as to how stable the station was. Otherwise, KPNZ would have probably been a better fit. They air Sex and the City from 6 - 7 PM, so I don't think they're too concerned about the market's conservative outlook. Besides, it's the rural areas of the state that tend to be most conservative socially, and KPNZ doesn't even reach most of those areas.

KJZZ is owned by Larry Miller, who owns the Utah Jazz (thus the team's flagship and the callsign. Miller is also a devout Mormon, thus this station (along with LDS-owned KSL-TV) tends to not air programming that offends the church.

Many people consider the entire state of Utah as Mormon owned-and-operated. I don't know much about these things, but I don't think there is much difference between urban and rural culturally in Utah.

KJZZ has a deal with CBS-owned KUTV 2 to carry news and reruns of Dr. Phil and other shows. I wonder if the price was right, CBS might purchase KJZZ in the future.

...interesting. And also apparently at odds with the fact that, in 2000, when KSL-TV refused to carry "God, The Devil & Bob" because the portrayal of God made Him appear to be a beer-drinking Jerry Garcia lookalike -- definitely offensive to the LDS brass -- it was KJZZ that NBC placed the show with...

The Salt Lake Valley (especially Salt Lake City) and parts of the Ogden area have become pretty moderate, socially. Yes, the LDS population is a fairly high percentage in these areas - but the level of "devoutness" (if that's a word) is not that high. These places have become pretty diverse. St. George is changing a bit in that direction too. On the other hand, the Provo/Orem (Utah Valley) area and most of the rest of the state (Park City and Price excepted) is very conservative - socially and otherwise.

Let's just say that KPNZ (Utah's 24) manages to reach the places where its programming is welcome. Also, they show "Hawaii Five-O" during prime time, which makes them OK in my book!

By the way, KJZZ was created as a platform for the Utah Jazz and (as stated previously) is owned by Larry H. Miller, the Jazz' owner. It was his brainchild. I do not see CBS purchasing KJZZ, as they just divested KUTV. Furthermore, I don't know that Miller would ever sell. As long as he owns the Jazz, KJZZ is their official mouthpiece. Other programming on the station ends up being secondary to that mission. Which is fine - the Jazz are very popular in Utah and KJZZ is a pretty well run station, considering its size. And, ultimately, local ownership is a good thing.
