KKAY

I just saw on the news that the new potential owners of KKAY plan on moving the station to addias la in WBR parish. This would bring it closer to BR. The current management is opposing it. Also the station is on a weird format :) to say the least. Last song was praise and worship. Current song is Witchcraft by Frank Sinantra :) now thats variety! And now..Zydego!!!

They can move the transmitter but not the City of License from White Castle as it's the city's only service and the new owners after purchase would have to bend over backwards to prove that the community can no longer support the station etc etc. (something that is not too often done)

They can also move the studios to Baton Rouge, but the station will still be a also ran as they would have to increase power to be heard in Baton Rouge like a local. As remember, the station HAS to provide a city grade signal over White Castle 24/7 and it actually barely provides coverage in Donaldsonville at night

BTW This station is actually licensed to Iberville Parish, but it's studios I believe date back to the KKAY-FM days (Now KNXX (former KKAY-FM 104.9) which is broadcast from Donaldsonville area transmitters but are coming from a Baton Rouge studio)

The format is a variety format and they will admit it as much. Surprisingly if you go back in the ownership records and the new application, you'll see some well known names in radio.

One of the new owners is a Starr which by the address listed I beleive is the son of Michael Starr former owner of KTIB, and one of the current owners is the Estate of Joe Costello (WRNO)

His name is James Starr, and he was mentioned in yesterday's Advocate saying he is not moving the station, just the tower closer to BR. Now, as far as the format....who knows?

The only way to "enhance" service would be to increase the power (Not hard to do, but may be considering 1600 KLEB), change the frequency (Move to a expansion channel), or the tower height and that would only be if he extends the lease or builds a new tower IMO. But like I said, the main service area will still have to include White Castle...

Thanks Johnny for the info on the new news article

Ok; Lets say the Fcc Ok's the move do you think Starr would try to increase the power because any move further north would degrade the signal coverage to its COL. I mean why move the transmitter closer to BR if he intends to keep it focused no Assumption and Iberville Parrishes.

He can move the tower all he wants as long as the station provides city grade coverage to White Castle. If he was to move it north say to Plaquemine, the only way to serve city grade to White castle is tower and power. as he has to serve white castle with a city grade day and night.... meaning a construction permit for at least say 1000 watts nighttime being my guess (currently they are 67 watts) from a site close to Plaquemine on either side of the river to cover BR and White Castle at the same time.
