KKBQ launches IBOC/HD

KKBQ 92.9 has fired up its IBOC/HD signal, as I am now hearing the digital sidebands. Must have happened in the last day or so; not present when I checked earlier this week.

Looks like KBXX 97.9 is the only Senior Road signal yet to launch IBOC/HD.

I haven't seen or heard about any Cox plans for HD2.

I guess Cox will get to KTHT 97.1 soon with the IBOC conversion.

I don't believe KKBQ runs the IBOC during "Drive" times as it would play havoc with the traffic reporter in the plane.

Last I heard, KTHT is not scheduled to go IBOC until sometime in 2007...possibly first quarter.

HUH ??

What would KKBQ running IBOC have to do with their traffic reporter ?

The traffic reports are on 455.55 I think it is, or close to that, so what does that have to do with IBOC ?

The traffic reporter interacts with the talent and needs an air feed to monitor unless there's another way to send pre-delay backhaul to the plane.
______________

Gee what happened to listening to the ANALOG??? And there is a way to get predelay IFB back....another UHF or VHF freq can do that....but the ANALOG is still there..just because the HD is on doesnt mean the traffic copter will use that....they can stay just as they were...with the FM Analog feed...duh!

The analog audio is delayed several seconds to stay in sync with the digital audio...duh!!!

Feel free to call Jed Wilkinson, Chief Engineer at Cox Radio-Houston, and he'll be more-than-happy to educate you...(713) 963-1200.

They could turn off the delay on the analog and keep the digital running...

But since most of the HD Radios in Houston can only be found in the offices of engineers running IBOC, who cares?
______________

Well the analog is delayed the same amount as the digital, which is 7 to 8 seconds, so you need a way to feed audio on iFB before the delay (Pre delay) to the chopper or remote. one could do it on an RPU frequency, or possibly on an F.M. Sub carrier, but it would HAVE to be brfore the delay. And remember the air talent vcan no longer have their phones monitoring air monitor either, it is very hard to talk when the audio in your headphones is delayaed 8 seconds.

Gawd, I really need more coffee!! I hate it when I forget things like that (and to think I was noticing KIOL was not delayed 8 secs in analog recently!! ARGH)..
Ok ok...so much for the analog argument.....(subcarrier has been done before for IFB)..must be older age catching up with me ;)

But a VHF or UHF backchannel can be done...(KRBE is doing it IIRC)
