KKDJ/Fresno Debuts New On-Air Lineup

This may have been posted twice; my mistake and I'm sorry. Anyway, broadcasting from world famous Cannery Row by way of Seaside...
.. ahh, the isotron.. slightly better then a dummy load

The 102.3 translator is owned by Gary Cocola who also owns 1 full power TV station KGMC 43 with several sub channels and many LPTV stations in the valley, Fresno and Bakersfield including KKDJ ch. 27 Classic Music Videos and they took over KAIL 53 My Network programming on 53.1 a sub channel on ch43 after KAIL sold 7.1 to a religious broadcaster, maybe FCC gave them a waiver of some sort.

so? who owns the translator doesnt make this legal.. the only places translators get program delivery method waivers is alasjka... and this translator in question isnt in alaska

Its been there for a couple of months; when it was on, I could get the signal as far as Marina/Castroville which is about 10 miles out from the site in Seaside. Didn't sound too bad in my car. And the FM at 95.9? Just plain bad-could swear it was in MONO.

I just looked up the record on the FCC database. Some fascinating (and vintage Verne) stuff:

1. The actual call letters of 1240 are KNBI (changed from Saul's KNRY). So, Verne brands as KMBY, and for the legal ID either says the call letters fast, slurs them or both and hopes either the listener (if he's IDing as KNBI) or the FCC (if he's IDing as KMBY) don't quite catch it.

2. His license status is Commercial. So Saul donated the station to a non-profit (Hanford Youth Services), which will run the station as a regular commercial outlet (David or BigA can tell me how common that might be).

3. There is nothing in the FCC file that I can see that suggests the FCC is aware the 200 foot tower at McAbee Beach isn't being used, and no authorization I can find anywhere for a temporary antenna at a different location.

4. His name appears nowhere. Ownership interest of Hanford Youth Services is shown as three people, his wife Denise and two other guys elsewhere in California with equal 1/3 interest.

The license expires December 1, 2021.

Unrelated to Verne:

Five years ago, Saul sent a letter to the FCC informing them of a change in the main studio for all the signals he owned in the market at that time, including 1240 to 48485 Highway 1 in Big Sur, which is the Hawthorne Art Gallery. That shows as the main studio now.

Two years before that, he sent a similar letter to the FCC giving the main studio address as 5 Harris Court in Monterey, which is where KWAV is now. Seems to revolve around Saul's acquisition at the time of KBOQ. Anyway, it means 1240 hasn't had its main studio on Cannery Row since 2014 (and given that Saul was mostly running canned formats out of Los Angeles, longer than that).

Hey Michael:
The KNBI in the TOH is clear but fast. On Saturdays when he does his Legends show, the TOH also includles KFRC San Francisco and KHJ Los Angeles. Perhaps a tip of the hat to the legendary stations, who knows lol!

He's on Facebook saying that show is on more than 400 radio stations. Verne......

As far as the legal ID during that weekend show, I'm not sure that's at all okay, especially since KFRC and KHJ are still active calls in those cities that are NOT carrying the show.
