From the inside circles...
Management is listening. Let's be honest, radio isn't what it used to be and the formats of today certainly reflect that. Couple the state of todays formats with automation systems and you can begin to see where radio lost its soul.
While the transition to digital content via an automation system can't be changed (who can you find to reliably fix turntables and cart machines for the next 50 years?), the management at KKDJ are working toward solving workflow problems within the studio. They have explained to me most people can follow the workflow of the current automation system, however it isn't up to snuff when you want to run sound effects, cue music, and even bill clients for commercials. Currently, with all that has to be done to format the day and accessing the music database, it can sour even the most positive of dispositions.
To that end, KKDJ's engineering is trying to solve many issues by going Open-Source with Rivendell Automation.
http://rivendellaudio.org . The workflow design in this system will allow Radio DJ's create their own workflow, not beholden to the station's "default" design.
KKDJ's goal with this new system is to design it much like the 1980's fashion of autostart cart through "pot on" commands, cueing audio, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants button-bar sound effects, and so forth; which is really what I believe Dean is after, not some sort of "click mouse here" kind of system.
Signal problems continue to be a limitation; to that end, KKDJ will supplement Dean's show on the 27.1 signal until legal issues between K259CF and KCIV are resolved through the FCC, only then would they be allowed to petition to move with relocating the signal and improving coverage.
It seems though, this is probably going to take some time. To which some opine is already too late, should've been worked out on Day 1, no excuses. Can't really please everybody now, can you?
