KKDZ 1250 at new transmitter site

And we know how well 300KW does from just south of the Port of Tacoma. Arc much? That wasn’t part of the plan was it? Or all the businesses that dealt with their phones and fax machines full of sports talk. Hahaha!

I can’t keep up with this thread because I am not a techie. All I know is KING AM was a disaster in the South Sound. XPRS out of Tijuana was much louder. But KING AM could be heard in Norway!.

That severe null certainly didn’t help 1090 remain viable in Seattle. 50KW is meaningless without a solid pattern. KVI 570 is much better with their prime transmitter placement and location at the bottom of the dial. Probably explains why iheart gave up on trying to make anything work on 1090.

Yet KING AM competed with KJR in the mid 70’s. Until the fm’s took over.
I’m guessing that was before there was significant population in southeast corner of King county. At that time KJR and KING were focused on Seattle, and weren’t thinking about some of the other parts of the market.
KTAC was probably more popular at that time for listeners in the KING null anyway.

KKDZ changed city of license from Seattle to Kent. Auburn, Kent, Puyallup and Sumner would be more attractive population centers to cover. Sure they didn't move there to cover Hobart.

They have an STA for 5KW day and 1.25KW night non directional from the Auburn site by Hwy18. I'm not seeing a license to cover the new site for 5KW or the night directional, but I didn't look very hard. They may still be operating under the STA. If they are running 5KW day it's just not getting out well beyond Auburn and Hobart.

I tried listening to them on the Fauntleroy dock at 4:45pm today and could not get them at all versus yesterday when I could hear them but not well. And that's salt water looking south, no power lines over head at the dock. Sure sounded like they were off the air, maybe working on the antenna.

A Friend tried listening to them around Southcenter mall a few days ago. Said it sounded like they were at 1KW.

If someone wants to buy advertising for a business in Hobart they’ll be happy to know that 1250 has a signal there. Among other places.

I don't live or commute where KKDZ comes in well anymore and I don't speak Punjabi. But by all means post the schedule once you buy the ads and I will try to catch one.

I also

You should consider buying a better antenna so you can listen. It’s likely that yours is the stock antenna that may not be as able to pick stations up as well as possible. Or maybe the coax got wet when it rained outside.

My antenna is fine. I have no issue receiving KMIA or KKMO. I also have several radios to evaluate radio stations with, AM and FM field intensity meters.

Do you drive a Tesla?

It sounds like your commute takes you along the water and close to the valley. Where those two stations are strong. A better antenna would help you receive 1250 . You said you don’t speak Punjabi, you should consider taking lessons. Listening to 1250 as much as possible will help you learn too.

I may or may not drive a Tesla.

Sort of on topic, but not completely on topic… does anybody know if the programming on 1250 is the same as what’s on the air in Whatcom county being beamed into British Columbia? I tried to look into, but it looks like everything has changed in the past few years. Radio India now advertises itself as being head on 1110 (when it was previously on 1600). No clue what programming is on the “border blasters” of 1550 and 1600, but I’d be curious to know. The only other thing that is known is that Sher-E-Punjab left 1550 and is now on 600 on the BC side.

And everyone knows, Kent/Auburn is an untapped advertising mecca.
200K+ people in the Kent/Auburn area, including a lot of Asians from the subcontinent, and if the signal hits SeaTac and Federal Way decently, there's probably 200K more people in the listening area, including a significant number of Asians and people from the subcontinent. SKC is the most ethnically diverse metro in the United States, and there are a lot of Asian (and other) immigrants in SKC. Drive down Benson some time, and see all the stores and businesses that cater to people from South Asia.

Much of that soil makeup amounts to what's called 'glacial till'. That's typically several layers of loose sand, some clay, and peat. It started as melting glaciers thousands of years ago that after running into what's now Puget Sound, left soil that isn't very conductive and turns structurally into soup when an earthquake shakes it.

Being wet helps a little for an AM ground plane, but nothing like good conductive soil that's wet too.
Thank you for the answer and explanation, Kelly. Much appreciated. I know a lot of the soil in the Green River Valley is from the lahar that happened about 6000 years ago, the rest apparently filled gradually. The Cedar River still is trying to create a delta in Lake Washington. The wonders of geology....

I think you hit the nail on the head here. Not sure what the programming looks like on 1250, but I’m sure they are trying to target listeners in Kent valley. It’s the only place I can think of in the region with a sizeable south Asian population.

I personally haven't heard much of 1250's programming, but I do get KVRI and KRPI fairly decently at night. I'll have to take a listen and see what the differences / similarities are.

I used to get the Punjabi station on 1560, but haven't heard them in a few months.
