Northwest Arkansas KKEG Flips To Classic Hits

Still the same nasty screaming rock, they just rebranded.

It might not be your cup of tea, but it's definitely not the same. It probably plays about 30-35% of the same tracks it played as a rocker. Have to say, though, that I never imagined The Keg would be the station to fill the classic hits void after 101.5 dropped the format.

KKEG, by the way, has been a lot of things during its roughly 55 year existence. It has generally been some form of rock, but it ran Top-40/CHR in the early-to-mid 80’s. It was also “92-1 The Zone” when Modern AC was big about 25 years ago. It ran a AAA format about 15 years ago, too.

When I went to college in Arkansas, I used to prefer the old Q102 (and Magic 107.9 on weekends), but KEG 92 was almost always the second or third button on my radio. Most of the guys on campus seemed to prefer it. I had a nasty 24-36 hour stomach virus my first semester there, and someone down the hall in the dorm had it playing all night. I can still remember lying in bed with my head over the trash can and hearing, “Keg 92, KKEG Fayetteville.” Definitely not one of my fondest memories of the station! Derek Somerz was an acquaintance when he worked there, and he used to give my girlfriend and me movie passes on the station. We weren’t big movie buffs, but we always found time to use those free passes. Neither of us paid for a single movie the entire time we dated!

Yes, someone near the outside balcony at John Brown University was always playing KKEG 92 too. I did nor like it though.

One of my biggest gripes about KKEG was that it sold airtime to Jay Cole. I believe all the Demaree Media stations in Arkansas did. I couldn't stand him. Hollie and I seemed to often run into him at the Walmart Supercenter (that was brand new at the time) on Hwy 62 just west of US 71 (now I-49). We always thought it was funny that he'd rant about a new world order and a cashless society and use Walmart as an example of a company contributing to that evil while he and his wife were regular shoppers there!

We also tried to be as obnoxiously affectionate as possible around the two of them. He used to say only gay people didn't like him, and that was our way of saying straight people weren't behind him either!
