So KKFR decided to switch formats and ditch their core Hip Hop Demo for the Top 40 format. Changed logo, brand and image. going to be a nice uphill battle being the #3 top 40 in the market with a limited signal.

Why abandon the only selling point you have as the only True Hip Hop station? The only thing that seperates you from KISS and JamZ? Im guessing this has to do with the fact that PPM proves niche stations like Power don't work in the PPM world and they saw the failure coming.

Holy Crap batman. Maybe there is hope that some "Energy" will make it way to the FM dial. I wonder who they will get to work at the new power and I wonder how much effect this will have on Kiss. Kinda makes sense now that they were courting Carrie from the Johnjay and Rich show for mornings. Should be interesting, anyone know when it flipped? Catch it by chance?

I will say though, its nice to know there is one less hip hop outlet in the valley. Yippie

I see this move backfiring on them. Are they really gonna be able to compete with two full market signals playing the same music? At least with hip-hop they were offering something slightly different, there were songs they played that kiss and jamz didn't, and I don't think there numbers were that bad for the signal. You would think Riviera would be more worried about the edge with their one share.

The announcment came this morning on the morning show. Yea i agree the move may backfire instead of help. They are trying to compete with Kiss and Jamz who both have full signals and have been in the format consistantly for much longer time.

Add to that their P1 listeners may be upset at the fact that they ditched them. whats their selling point now to advertisers? Their recent ratings dont hold much weight now because its not a reflection of the new image and changes they have made. 3rd top 40 station at half the signal doesnt seem smart.

Radio and Records Piece out today on PPM and Market flux

The winning formats? Such baby boomer destinations as oldies, classic rock and classic hits, and mainstream/general-market formats, including news, CHR/top 40, AC and hot AC, rock and country. In general, these formats saw significant increases in audience share.

The losers? Niche formats that rely on small core loyal audiences that listen for longer periods of time, such as Spanish-language formats, urban and urban AC, talk and smooth jazz. Audience shares for these formats tumbled in some cases by as much as 25%.

Why would listeners now fight through all that static when they can hear the same music on a static free station?

Is there a backdoor URL for their Webstream? It's not accessible from the Website.

http://radiostationworld.com/redirect/redirectLive.asp?ID=36233 lists the backdoor stream as http://www.power983fm.com/power983.asx -- however, going to that address takes you to the "Not Found" page on Power's site: http://www.power983fm.com/404.php

Is there any particular reason why they would have disabled the stream? I would think that KKFR (and all of the other stations trying to target Phoenix from up north) would make a top priority to keep the stream functioning 24/7.

Neither Jamz NOR Power sound even remotely like what they are promoting themselves as... Hit Music Stations.

Evolution?? come now stealing Hot 97's log and trying to infringe on KZON's slogan isnt exactly evolution. KKFR is not doing anything that hasnt already been done and executed in this market by 2 other stations with 100k Watt stations. Seeing that over the last 4 books KZON and KISS perform better than KKFR with Women 18-34 and 18-49 they dont do all that great.

So..... This is what I find:

"In 1982, the construction permit for KEZC was issued on 92.3 FM. In 1984, KJJJ-FM, a country music station, signed on. In 1985, KJJJ-FM flipped from country, and KKFR premiered as a gold-based Top 40 outlet known as "The Fire Station." Over the years they began shifting towards a rhythmic/dance music mix. They also adopted the "Power 92" moniker in 1988 and patterned their direction on (then-future and now-former sister station) KPWR/Los Angeles. They would later modify it to "Power 92.3" in 2000.

From 1993 to early 1994, they evolved to a mainstream Top 40 and leaned slightly toward modern rock (to less of an extent than other Top 40 stations in other markets), but the ratings slipped; and from January to March 1995, the rhythmic and dance music returned to the KKFR playlist.

By 1997, they played less dance songs, leading the transformation into a R&B/Hip-Hop approach. By the end of the year, the station was no longer Top 40. Beginning in 2005, they started adding more rhythmic pop tracks into the playlist.

Chancellor Media (which later became AMFM, Inc.) purchased the station in late 1998 from its longtime owners, but when the company merged with Clear Channel Communications, they had to divest the station to meet FCC ownership regulations. Emmis Communications became its owner in 2000.

[edit] Move to 98.3

On 8 May 2006, Emmis sold KKFR to Bonneville International, which, in turn, announced that the station would become the news station for the market, their AM on 620 absorbing the sports assets of KMVP; 92.3 would become KTAR-FM. On 12 July, Emmis sold the KKFR intellectual property to Riviera Broadcast Group, which already owned KEDJ, a modern rock outlet on 103.9 FM licensed to Gilbert for use on another radio station. The station was KKLD Prescott Valley, which moved to Mayer and became the new KKFR on 1 September [1]. The Power name was kept, but the frequency portion of the name was adjusted to fit the new location.

On June 22, 2007, KKFR picked up an unlikely competitor when KZON dropped Talk to go Rhythmic as "101.5 JAMZ". When KZON made the flip it aired attack liners towards KKFR by telling listeners that "The Power's Out," "Where Hip-Hop USED to live," and "100,000 watts of 'Static-Free' Jamz!" However, in a statement made to the Arizona Republic, KKFR PD Bruce St. James had the following to say, "What are they going to do? Play more Hip Hop than us? Really, I think we'll be ok." [1]

On December 1, 2008, KKFR dropped "Where Hip Hop Lives" in favor of the the slogan "The Valley's #1 Hit Music Station" but retained its Rhythmic direction. Ironically KZON adopted the latter slogan in November, a month before KKFR changed theirs. This move now gives Phoenix two radio stations with the same format and slogan."

.....is this true?

I remember back in the day, Power (KKFR) was the one who introduced me to Amber, No Mercy, Captain Hollywood Project, La Bouche, Angelina, Planet Soul, Lil Suzy...etc.

It wasn't until I went to LA and heard Power 106 La's Party Station! and discovered Jocelyn Enriquez, Stevie B and the REAL deal of things that got me into music and Dj'ing. The notorious Power Workout at noon - Power 106..... Then I went back to Atlanta where I hated all the stations. The year I moved back to Az from Atlanta, Power let go of their top 40 dance and went hip hop. Shortly after (within three years) Atlanta got a new top 40 station in 2000 that introduced everyone to dance and let everyone hear Jocelyn and Planet Soul for the first time in 2001 (better late than never) and let them know there was more in this world than just hip hop and booty bass. I was so pissed at the turn of events.... but I will not get into more on that right now.

One thing I have to say is that with hip hop in a state of decline in the US, it's about time we start moving on as the next big thing in music approaches. Those that are smart will start popping up Classic Hip Hop stations before everyone else starts jumping on that when they realize what's going on. We had Jazz, Rock'n'roll, disco, the short pop phaze with multiple boy/girl band groups, now hip hop has passed its peak. Time to start looking towards what's next, and the safest was to do this when you're unsure what will really be next is to just be a hit music station because whatever is next will most likely become hits. We are currently missing a REAL top 40 station, while we have a bunch of rhythmic stations. I used to think that there is no more room for a top 40 station (that includes all the alternative in the top 40 as well), but if there can be two rhythmic stations, I'd say with that logic we could have another top 40 station. What is really missing right now is a dance leaning top 40 station. As far as pure r&b and reggae, I wont get into that now. So far, 95.1 is the best at supplying any dance music. Kiss could and should play more. JamZ has the "party station" format, which I think would be more fun than using the typical "hitz & hip hop". Howerver, unlike some of the other hits and hip hop stations across the U.S, no afterhourz dance mixshows during the late nights until 3 am. I wonder if Power would pick this up then? KVVA 107.1, they seem to not be doing well and it became extremely boring when they removed their latin house and trance mix on Saturday nights and weekdays at 4pm. They also played Marc et Claude, Amber, Sonique, In-grid...etc along with their latin house. Now 107.1 bores me and I'd rather them go to r&b or something. Even if they became KFYI, I'd prefer that.

As far as hip hop stations, I don't know why many of them still want to be known as "where hip hop lives". For example, Power 106 in LA and Hot 97 in New York. They are trying to still be hip hop while playing "disturbia", "closer", "the anthem", "right now (na na na)"...etc. This is not hip hop, and you can say "hip hop is changing", but that really doesn't make too much sense when there is already another genre for that style of music that it's evolving in to... They need to face the fact that times are changing and trying to brainwash these kids that everything in this world is either hip hop, pop and r&b is not the way to do it. I bet if these same hits were released 10 years back, they wouldn't be called hip hop or r&b... Maybe Fergalicious by Fergie, "lose control" by Missy, low by Flo-Rida, Get up by Ciara and in the ayer by Flo Rida would pass as booty bass 10 years back because booty bass does use freestyle beats sometimes. If this is the direction music is going and stations want to keep up with it, then they should let go of "where hip hop lives" or "...#1 for hip hop" and use the appropriate "today's hottest music" or something. However, having 3 rhythmic stations playing "hits" doesn't make too much sense either. Everytime that happens, one always loses, and I can bet that 95.1 will still do alright and not be the one to die while playing some hip hop and r&b with their spanish pop urbano with all these other hit stations wanting to play hit music.

I'm guessing that if Power is now a hit music station, they'll eventually have to AT LEAST add "hot & cold" by Katy Perry and "Let it rock" by Kevin Rudolph and probably get rid of a lot of their latin hip hop, such as Lil rob...etc. Let 95.1 or JamZ have Pocos Pero Locos, and as far as slow jams and dedications, I thought it was silly for Kiss to do it with a rhythmic top 40 "hit music station" format. Slow Jams should be for urban format stations that play hip hop.... but then again, times are changing, so I guess it's time to change the game when it comes to that. Power probably should get rid of many of the current dj's they have now because if any "hits" are added in with the hip hop and the dance version of those hits start being played in mixshows, some of the dj's wouldn't know what to do to do it properly. All the "house dj's" are now at 101.5 JamZ, not playing house. (House dj's meaning they grew up knowing about house and know how to mix it party style).

Maybe it should be here in the U.S. just like it is in London. R&B, House, Hip Hop, and Bassline are all accepted as urban, and that's just the urban side of things. Hopefully bassline crosses over to the US at some point. Who knows. Could be the next big thing. Giving Craig David's new album some attention would be a start...

Too bad for Kiss FM... Now they are stuck with "Johnjay & Rich and All The Hits". They should have held on tightly to "Arizona's #1 Hit Music Station". I guess they could also go with "All The Hits 104.7 Kiss FM" if anything should happen to Johnjay & Rich, but that wouldn't sound right. I remember back when Power changed to "where hip hop lives" again for the second time then Kiss stole "today's hottest music" very quick before Power had a chance to go back to it if they wanted to. Justin was right when he said "what goes around comes around". ..And I'm tired of Power. How about Wild 98.3 or something else? Hot 98? Z98.3...? If anything, dance leaning top 40 seems a bit safe right now. You think a lot of hits today sound like dance? Wait until 2009 and when the economy improves and see what people that are holding back now will put out. Somebody will have to touch on the dance format, the same way reggaeton caused many to jump on the reggaeton format. Will all the phases in music we've been through, something eventually has to make a come back, and I guess when you logicaly look at things, what's going on in music right now will lead to a new sound in dance.

Geez, reply #13 is longer than some of my posts about Lumberyard 1440!* ;D

BTW, what is the source authority for questions and answers used here on
Hip-Hop Jeopardy? Compton's Encyclowikipedia? (Thank you Don Pardo!)

Hip-Hop is dead?

Best news I've heard since dinner veggies ran out before they got to me.

I agree with the last few posts times are changing and we have to move on!!! I think the power name needs to stay its been around for a long time! as far as there mixers go yea they do need new ones! Too bad for energy 92.7 it could have made a come back if this top 40 format is coming back who knows maybe they can bring back todays hottest music it makes more sense! i think that The Beat will go up in ratings because there are ppl that wanna listen to hip hop and well they are now technically playing it and are the only ones right now!!! TIMES ARE CHANGING AND I SEE MORE CHANGES!!!!

OK! I just noticed what's going on here. JamZ is using "#1 hit music station" too! How is it posible that two stations get by with the same slogan?

LOOKING AT THINGS FROM A LOGICAL POINT OF VIEW:
Out of the two stations, who should rightfully and sensibly be allowed to use the "hit music" slogan? Lets think about this for a second, along with some of the facts I'm about to add. In Atlanta, 95.5 The Beat was Atlanta's #1 hit music station. They kept a rhythmic format, playing mainly hip hop and r&b, but also played "gotta get through this" by Daniel beddingfield and "heaven" by Dj Sammy along with tracks by Inoj, Ghost town DJ's, and Freak Nasty...etc. Now we have a rhythmic station here (101.5 JamZ) who has a true rhythmic format, along with Hollywood Hamilton's rhythm top 40 and they've been playing rhythmic hits such as hits by Katy Perry and other things that a rhythmic station should play. They touch a bit on top 40 music. Power 98.3, however, plays more urban hits. Which station do you think should be the hit music station?

If anything, Power is going to have to change to become a hit music station. JamZ is already at a format where they could use the slogan "#1 hit music station" because many rhythmic stations do that along with the top 40 stations. Unless Power decides to slowly change and add in other stuff as time goes along, it would only be sensible that they let go of the slogan. I'm sure Kiss is probably getting a kick out of this whole thing. This would only happen in Az. Makes just about as much sense as every station in Atlanta refusing to play Danity Kane. I noticed that Power was beginning to sound more like JamZ as time went on, but this is just too much. It really doesn't make any sense at all. If we need anything, it should be something the valley DOESN'T already have... If we're going to be all sitting here playing hits, then someone should also acknowledge the dance remixes of some of those hits in their mixshows. Rhythmic is where the hits should be, and I think 101.5 has already taken care of that. You go to Sirius/XM and they have RHYTHM R&B HITS. Appearantly, JamZ is where the hits belong, and Power should try something else instead.

That's like someone opening up a store called Mega Foods and I decide to show up and open a store called Mega Foods, but with a different aisle arrangement inside.

I've been posting on other sites and not not here, BUT with this going on, I finally had to say something. If you think this is a lot, you should've seen what I did on another site when 101.5 JamZ first popped up because I was excited for the dance music I thought they'd eventually add. It didn't work out as I hoped because although WiLD 94.9 in California played a lot of dance, they didn't completely carry that same format down here, THEN they got rid of the mixshows where the little dance and booty bass they did play was featured. I was disappointed, but always had a bit more respect for JamZ than Power because JamZ has the dance mixshow potential. They have the format, but are not willing to try it. I remember back when Kid & Ruben and the whole party crew introduced afterhourz to the valley back in 1997 and ever since 103.9 changed I was so pissed that I quit listening to that station to the point I forgot they existed until only recently I started back. Strawberry was kept, while Nessa is back on Wild 94.9 The Bay Area's Party Station. They themselves have changed a lot (by removing a lot of dance specialty mixshows) and giving some of their staff to JamZ.

Hip Hop is not dead, just like rock N Roll is not dead, but it will eventually not be the "Big thing" anymore, just like what happened in rock n roll. All the smart people who saw rock n roll was about to be topped by the next big thing jumped in on the classic rock stations first. Now, this is what's beginning to happen in hip hop. You'll have classic hip hop, and lite hip hop (just like lite rock). This is always what happens as  people see the signs of evolution, and the only people who will survive will be the people who show they can evolve with the times. This is why Beyonce is doing alternative, Akon is doing a bit of euro dance/freestyle, and Kanye is.... well, just changing as well. Pitbull was always ahead of the game because his true passion is booty bass, house, latin house and freestyle along with rap. He didn't wait, he just went out there and started bringing back the use of faster beats early. He didn't wait around for everyone else to see that using faster beats today would and could work. He actually used uptempo beats before Missy and Timbaland tried it and had everyone else jumping on it to the point where dance music is back on urban radio today (congrats to Timbaland and missy changing the sound of music, twice).

Now with all this going on in music, it is effecting how stations want to label themselves because no one is sure what to call this sudden change in urban music. This is something different (similar to how when freestyle first popped up, they didn't call it freestyle, but Shannon, Corina, and Lisette Melendez...etc were all considered latin hip hop). HOWEVER, there's still no excuse for there to be TWO identical stations, no matter how confusing or unpredictable the music market may be. That just doesn't make sense. Even if we have a station that's the opposite of 98.7 The Peak - just like The Peak but playing playing the best of everything from the (70's) 80's 90's and today on more of the urban r&b/pop side of things, that would be great. I just believe that Power should stick with what they had or go to something else. As much as I would like a Party Station format, I'm not sure if there's any room for that anymore, but dance leaning top 40 is still possible if they do it correctly...and I guess that would be better than a Party Station that limits dance music to only mixshows, now that I've become tired of hip hop.

At least Power 106 Where HIP HOP Lives in California was sensible enough to keep their DJ's. Richard Humpty Vission is still part of their line up. So is Eman Echo and Virman. They seriously used to give Rockell, Jocelyn Enriquez, Lil Suzy, and Lina Santiago massive play and was amazing during the Holiday Mix weekends, back in the day. Now with dance coming back, they have an excuse to throw in some of those old records and mash up since they perfectly fit in. Much of the new generation of Dj's don't know what to do with the new dance style hits coming to radio today because it's all new to them.

A lot of radio stations disagreed with me on those topic before Ne-yo, Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg and others started using uptempo/dance beats and became successful with it.

Not true, but that's what lawyers are for! Jamz changed their website and on-air imaging a few hours after Power announced it. Power has billboards and vans wrapped, gonna be hard for CBS to prove Power did all that after Jamz said it once on Sunday. Par for the course for a station that hasn't originated anything in the miserable 18 months they've been broadcasting.

I'd be a little upset if the sales manger walked in and told me to change the name of the station because Power did. Doesn't say much for all the confidence the Jamz lackeys have on this site.

Is Mikey still giving the "hold on until PPM comes" speech". Think he'll last that long with ratings and billing dropping faster than the GM's pants?
