KKFR to cease in 2011?

I read on there wikipedia that they will cease tio exist in early 2011 does anyone know if this is true?

From the Wikipedia article, "Due to a decline in the number of listeners, however, it has been announced that KKFR will cease operations during the early to middle part of 2011, to be replaced by a station with a Christian-based format." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KKFR

A Christian-based format? Talk about doing a complete 180!

As a side note, who made this announcement? I haven't seen or heard anything about this. Any confirmation from the suits at Power 98.3? Should we just call up Bruce St. James right now on KTAR and ask him personally? ;D

A Jamaican-Polka format with KZON throwing in the towel as well? YIKES!

An unnamed source is quoted as saying the imaging for the new Jamaican-Polka format will be handled by the same crazy Jamaican who does the voice work for the Red Stripe beer commercials. The new TOH liner? KKFR Glendale-Phoenix, Hooray Jamaican-Polka! ;D

Hey, if Geoffrey Holder can be the voice of Kayyyy-ohhhh-tayyyy, why not? ;D

I smell a Wikipedia hoax.

Absolutely. Stations don't announce format changes 6 months in advance and then have any expectation of selling any time in the meantime... format changes seldom have more than a few days public notice prior to happening. Some don't even have a few hours notice.

I'm guessing you meant to say KKFR Mayer-Phoenix...but the point is well taken :)

The Wikipedia article also says that the KKFR calls are "a reference to its status: Forgotten Reject". I assume that's also a hoax.

BY THE WAY forget which post it was but i remember how great Slim was at KKFR . might've still been called 'fire 92' when she was on...hence the FR IN THE call letters if you ever wondered.

It must've been a hoax. The reference about the station ceasing operations in 2011 was removed from the article.

Along with the reference to the KKFR call-sign standing for "Forgotten Reject." It now says that KKFR is, "A reference to its former moniker "92 Fire FM")."

Definitely sounds like the whole thing was hoax. I blame KZON! ;)

The Nurse and I blame Dubya....he can't find any book he's read for his new library, so he spends his time editing Wikipedia. And yes, the Slim One was great on KKFR...wonder if she can do the Jamaican Polka format?

Keep in mind that if it did happen, then there would be more room and reasoning for ANOTHER STATION to change.... And business wise, change doesn't always turn out to sound better...

I like how the KKFR Wikipedia entry says 92.3 got its construction permit in the early 80s.

You learn something new every day on Wikipedia... ::)

...maybe the CP for the South Mountain stick... but otherwise KJJJ and KTXC were figments of my imagination.

Bring back Disco 92!

Sounds logical, John. The 92.3 stick was originally atop the Ho (Westward, not Valley).

BTW, was it relocated anywhere else, in between its time there and South Mountain?

Shaw Butte. That stick was relegated to backup status until Fred sold the transmitter & antenna to KNAI.
