Welcome KTAR-FM?

Just heard the news on KTAR itself. This purchase puts the Power 92.3 format on the line. If Bonneville flips the format, will Kiss FM lose the pop tracks and go straight Rhythmic? I can see Club 95 dropping most of the reggaeton and Spanish-language pop and wooing Power's listeners.

Re: KKFR... where news radio lives

will bruce st james will be news talkin again ?will there be an 'all news' 92.3 hd2 ? ..or 'talk radio for women' ??

Billboard's Ken Tucker is reporting that Bonneville International plans to bring its “News on the FM” initiative to Phoenix. The company has signed a letter of intent to acquire rhythmic top 40 KKFR (Power 92.3) from Emmis Communications for $77.5 million. Bonneville plans to simulcast some of its news talk programming from soon-to-be sister KTAR on the new station.

According the news release RE: KKFR format:"We’re very aware,” Mr. Reese said, “of the popularity ‘Power 92.3’ (KKFR) enjoys and of thelarge listener base it has established. Because we have deep respect for that success and especiallyfor the station’s listeners and employees, we hope to preserve the Hip Hop format and will negotiatewith other stations and operators, several of whom already have expressed very high levels ofinterest, to transition Power 92.3’s musical format to another frequency and operator and preserve itfor Phoenix listeners.”So Bonneville can make back some of its purchase cost by selling the intellectual (?) property of KKFR.

And one has to wonder about the conjunction of the sale of power92 and the bid by Jeff Sumulyn to buy back the outstanding shares of Emmis and take the company private.
What's to wonder?

i'd rather wonder what's to come of this for a concept like Power that has been a heritage Rhythmic station in the market for close to 20 years. The questions coming of this are1. when will the sale be complete?2. how soon does KKFR flip to KTAR?3. What offers will Bonneville listen to?4. Does CC go after it despite having only 3 months invested in Johnjay and Rich?5. Would Bonneville prefer to support smaller and independent owners and sell the rights to them?6. Can a smaller owner take Power to where it once was? 7. Could Kid and Ruben end up on Power again once it moves?

How are they being received by Phoenix listeners? Does it seem that they are just filling airspace?

You can put Pat McMahon on FM, but you can't force anyone under 70 to listen.i dont think its as much about the reg programming as it is the specialty programming. in the next year KTAR will have 3 of the 4 major sports teams on their station. I know the Cards have been on FM for a while now, but if you put the d-backs, cards, and suns on the same FM station thats a good move on the same FM station. It may not be as effective for the Cards now that all of their home games will be on TV this season, but still its a good move i think

It would be technically possible to place a Suns game on 92.3 and a Diamondbacks game on 620, if they play at the same time (which they do in April and sometimes May), but would that go against Arbitron simulcasting rules? If so, this wouldn't totally elminate the need for KMVP (there's always ASU sports), but it would allow both games to be available to the entire Phoenix area if they both play at night.

4. Does CC go after it despite having only 3 months invested in Johnjay and Rich?wait....would they(CC) toy with a scenerio similar to that of CC S.F.? "The "KISS" franchise works for them in Phoenix, barely. So why not flip one of the other FM's there. KOY or Kay-y-OOO-tee...to Top 40/R. 5. Would Bonneville prefer to support smaller and independent owners and sell the rights to them?Club 95 is good idea too. I'm surprised there as lonely as they are with that format. Someone else will come along if they flip. That's a format waiting to explode here...6. Can a smaller owner take Power to where it once was? Emmis couldn't. They never had any plans to either...CC could, but they'd have to keep that playlist untouched...including the Friday night shows!Sun City would need to spend money, they don't have... 7. Could Kid and Ruben end up on Power again once it moves? Why not... they decided to stay, and this bodes well for them.

Most likely August or September.

Unless there's an LMA (which I haven't heard), when the sale closes.

I suppose all reasonable offers.

Not exactly. Most likely, the owner with the best offer will get the Power format.

If the sale of the Power intellectual property happens a month or two before the switch and they can promote it enough to let listeners know where they will be.

Entravision has an underperforming FM with near-full market reach on 103.5. Will they ever catch up to KHOT (or KNAI, for that matter)? And yes, they do local non-Spanish language formats too. Then there's Riviera and 103.9. It would be painful to see The Edge go away in favor of picking up the rights to Power. But radio is a business, and if they can make more money and gain more listeners that way, they will try.

Actually 92.3 is the average AGE of a Pat McMahon listener :eek:Nurse Jeff and I think CC will cannibalize one of their FMs to become KFYI-FM before the Men In Secret Underwear get this thing through the FCC. An LMA is KT'R's best hope to be the first news/talk FM in Phoenix. So if BOTH KFYI & KT'R go FM, does that mean the end of AM radio as we've known it? We think YES. :-*

Not until KFNX gets an FM will that be true. Think 97.5 with John Dayl mornings. Mortgage brokers in stereo... yippee!

That station does way too well in the 25-54 demo

They need KOY like Sheriff Joe needs another media event! Comes down to Mix or KISS on the short list for KFYI-FM. How much of that 5-fifty revenue do they want to gamble on NOT going FM? ???
