Re: Question: Spanish ads on AM540

As this thread is discussing Mount Wilson properties....a question:
I have noticed that the 1260 / 540 simulcast sometimes breaks into separate commercial breaks, with 540 often airing spots in Spanish. Why?
I do not recall the prior formats on 540 airing spots in Spanish (there were, of course, few spots in English too).
And it goes without saying, that Spanish advertising thrust in the midst of an English newstalk station is a misfit, and worse, drives away listeners.

540 is broadcast out of Mexico.. as I remember. I thought it was Ironic that Emmis flipped country out for more Latin American listeners.... and US country music started coming out of Mexico...

I think the ratings are pretty good. There's been no real big advertising even.

Thus no further investment by Levine making flipping easier. If you put money out there for promotion, etc, you have invested into the station format. He hasn't.

Good point Shirley. Levine has NOT invested in promotion, or in upgrading station equipment. If he is really serious about KKGO succeeding, he needs to put his money where his mouth is!

KGoddess and Hillbillyrockstar,

It was just a short while ago you guys were singing Shawn's praises on KKGO's morning show on the countryboards.com message boards. Now you can't stand him. What did he do to make you guys so mad?

Excuse me? Who are you? Show me where I said I couldn't stand Shawn.

I'll have to assume you were mistaken adding my name to your post here.

I was wondering the same thing. Your posts actual sound more like you worship the man and that he walks on water for you so I am thinking Mr1derful got that wrong too.

I'm thinking Mr1derful could be Shawn himself; it wouldn't be the first time Shawn has posted on a board under a fake name.

Back to the issue of ratings for a minute,
Look while the top 10 most listened to morning drive jocks on LARadio.com is not the end all be all, it does say something about respect and who is listening. Making that top 10 means you have the respect of the industry as well as a decent listener base. It is a good judge of what the market is feeling. Again, it's not the final say but making that list does say something.

As for Peter and Brian on the list, people had to write in who they listened to specifically. People had to make an effort who they liked to make an entry. Brian was on sometime after the format flip and was doing nights at KZLA anyway. If it was left over form the previous station, they would have put down Peter since he was doing mornings. Not the night guy?.
Anyway, the list was the top 10 and that's why we have this discussion. Shawn didn't even make the new list anywhere in the top 20. That does say something

Thanks for putting those words in my mouth. But on the contrary, I don't think anyone walks on water.

If you're so interested in my posts, please re-read them and make sure you understand that I'm just being rational.

Just because I don't share the same Shawn-bashing views as others doesn't mean I think someone walks on water.

I'd like to see the acutal numbers submitted for this list. If only 30 people responded, and 2 were for Brian with the rest for the others in the list, then there's a pretty good chance Brian would make the list. I'm not saying anything bad here--Brian is great! I'm just saying if we knew how many people responded then we could have more insight. If only 10 people responded, each for a different person, then...see what I mean?

If someone has a view opposite of yours you consider it bashing. He is not the quality host that other professionals are and that is apparent. Holding a morning show slot is not his best placement for any radio station. Either he needs more instruction on how to do a morning show from his PD (that is if he will take advice) and from what I hear the station needs to treat listeners better - starting with him.

No, there are some other places where these types of comments have been made and I guess I lumped them all together with those made here. Since mr1derful made the comment about another place, I guessed I would bring up some stuff from there.

If we change this thread to another time slot I would be one of the first to say that Parr can fit there nicely. Actually, still comparing KZLA to KKGO seems old hat and a dead topic to me. Morning show slots are significant to any radio station. We all know that or this topic probably would not have been started. But Peter to Parr comparisions are like oranges and apples. Maybe neither belong there on country radio. Country radio in the LA market is suffering.

I agree that comparing Parr with Tilden is not relevant. The two shows are completely different. I like Shawn's show because it is mostly music (which he knows all about). I don't think it is anyone's (DJ or station) fault for the reason country radio in LA is not as popular as other stations (uh, the #1 station for example).

I agree..... Shawn was great in the mid-day slot!

I loved Peter Tilden. He always started my day with laughter. It's been over a year since Black Thursday and I still miss him!

In my opinion, Todd Baker and his sidekick Nora Wells are the best thing that has ever happened to my afternoon drive. I laugh so hard, I forget about being stuck in traffic.

Since Todd is not as egotistical as some... Nora is not relegated to "Uh huh"....."Uh huh" and "Uh huh" for the duration of the show. I do, however, miss the interaction with the live callers and the fifth hour of Todd we recently lost!

Are we being punished for boostingTodd's popularity too much?

Only objection I have to Todd is he's gonna make me laugh so hard one of these days that I'm gonna have an accident!

Todd going off the air at 6pm could have been his idea...

Me, too! And.... Peter affected me the same way....lol!

Actually Shawn Parr is the right guy for the Morning show at KKGO. He has a huge following, a great knowledge of the format, artists and music, great timing, great voice, great energy and does a great job at remotes and appearances. Shawn just needs a good PD to guide him.

The problem with KKGO is the programming, music and imaging of the station. Both of which are currently eclectic and not mainstream at all, as needed in the Country format! Musically, there are too many non-hits and the imaging sounds like a college station not a Country station at all. Country listeners are conservative, upper income and upper demo's and really aren't as hip as the station is programming to. They want the basics of Country music, the new and the classic Country hits of all time. Not the eclectic Country that I hear on that station. Formatics and personalities are basic, personable, family oriented and they make you feel as though you are part of their family. These are all the things that Shawn is truly a master of! But unfortunately KKGO as a Country station has none of those qualities.

Stop trying to be a hip L.A. station. It never worked for KZLA and it's not working at KKGO. KKGO might just have thee best signal in L.A. radio and it's being wasted by doing a very poor Country programming job!

What a shame!
