KKLF 1700

FYI, KKLF 1700 has returned to the air running Christian music in Spanish, IDing in Spanish as "Radio Formula 1700 and 95.7".

Pretty tough time with reception, but it's there. KEBE and KKLF both on the air? It's simply amazing, I'll tell you what.
 
Any reason why KKLF is only 5 kW daytime instead of the normal 10 kW for Expanded Band stations? Dallas isn't that close to the border.
It was originally 10kW days/700 watt nights at Denison. Went to 1kW at night in 2006. Until you mentioned it, I hadn't realized it was dropped to 5kW days. I'd assume that co-channel KVNS in Brownsville is responsible for the power reduction.

I doubt KVNS is an issue. The two stations are 500 miles apart, and groundwave propagation on 1700 is lousy.

I want to say Clear Channel increased the day power on KVNS, somewhere along the line, which would have lead to KKLF dropping power. I just don't know.

Wouldn't an appearance by Chip or Huff be a Godsend right about now?
 
For a couple of years before they went silent last year, KKLF had been very strong at night here in Houston, completely dominating KVNS. Prior to that, it was pretty equal at my location. I had wondered at the time whether they were running their daytime power 24/7. Since they're back on, they seem to be appreciably weaker.
 
The decrease to 5kw is because of interference issues. They moved the daysite to the night site in 2105 and had a CP for 10kw and built that out in late 2015. They got blanketing interference complaints at the station not long after they lit up, but the FCC didnt seem to get those complaints till 2-018.. long after theyre legally required to do anything, but they said they would. I cant find it, but in an STA requested, they had a request for 1kw, which they implemented and then said theyd modify the 10kw CP to quiet the interference complaints

I had to dig through a bunch of fcc paperwork to figure that one out

I had to find where the start of this paper trail is then follow that trail and dig around some in between points .... cuse at that point, i was curious why they were only 5kw.

KKLF has filed an application to diplex with KGGR. 10kw days, 800 watts nights.

“Claro Communications, LTD, (Claro) submits this application to relocate the antenna system of KKLF facility from its licensed location to the KGGR licensed site. KKLF proposes diplexed operation with KGGR utilizing the same transmit antenna, ASRN 1221248. Both facilities are non-directional. No tower construction is proposed.
KGGR tower AGL 160 meters, which is 194.1 degrees at 1040 khz.
KGGR tower height @ 1700 khz is 326.5 degrees.
Applicant will install a 89.8 degree (44 meters) folded unipole for KKLF and a detune skirt for the remaining 236.5 degrees of the tower relative to KKLF operating on 1700 khz. Applicant will utilize the existing ground system of KGGR.”


 
KVNS's original CP was for 8.8 kW daytime and 880 W nighttime (limited by proximity to the border), the same as they are now.
The reason KVNS is 8.8 kW daytime and 800 watts nighttime is that they used one of the four towers that was part of the original 1600 array before the station moved to 1700. The tower for 1600 was taller (and more efficient) than a quarter wave on 1700 so the need to reduce power to keep the radiation equivalent to a quarter wave tower on 1700 with 10 kw/1 kW
