KKOB "Local News"

So is there anyone else wondering how come KKOB claims to be a "local" news station, when the news folks are constantly reading national stories? It's so bad at times, when the taped newscasts are aired after 8pm (right after the ABC network newscast), the local news reader (Milholland-Allen-McCallum etc...) will read the same stories I just heard the ABC newscaster read. Shameful.... and it's downright LAZY the staff does this!

When a local story is part of the newscast...it's sometimes TWO DAYS OLD! The ND should be fired for letting this crap go on.... but if you're the ONLY radio news game in town, I guess you can do whatever you want, and get away with it!

What the hell are you talking about? KKOB just celebrated their 85th anniversary of broadcasting in New Mexico, and no local station has [ever] come close to a challenge of their arbitron ratings, neither morning, midday, pm drive or eve. The station was celebrated by it's broadcasting excellence by big business, local government and more.

KKOB has carried the UNM Lobo basketball games for as long as I remember, and in years past, the Dukes (AAA Baseball). KKOB has at least two (2) Marconi awards, and probably more broadcast awards than any NM station in memory.

Local programming includes: M-F programming 8-10am available with call-in and e-mail to the host; Saturday call-in shows for automotive and computer problems. The mayor has a weekly show with call-in. And, yes, the mayor's ex-wife even has a weekly children's reading show.

"The only radio news game in town"? You gotta be kidding. You should take your three-transistor Radio-Shack pocket radio back to Jal or Hobbs and tune in for the noon bc of the hog-futures or the Radio Flea-Market.

And before you ask, I'm not employed by Citadel or any other owner in this market. I'm just really tired of whiners like you.

UHHHH for most of the 1990's KRST the only country station in town was pulling down 10 & 11 shares and regularly beat KOB. I would say that if someone with a BRAIN and some $$$$ could bring KOB down....KAGM had the money but NOT the brains.

How do you beat KOB with non political counter programing. with strategic good local programing.

I find it funny that KOB's audience is well over 60% 50+ yet they get well over 50% of all ad revenue....what does that say about all those 25-54 cheerleaders

There was also a time in the mid-80's when a station on 105.9 called Q-106 with an ex-770 manager beat 770 in the ratings. KOB-AM (the call letters at that time) responded by running a contest giving away a house. That fixed the ratings for a while, but as the previous poster said, KRST beat them for a time later on. The Albuquerque radio market is estimated at $45 million annually, with KKOB-AM estimated to do around $8 million a year. That is about 18% of the market - nearly a fifth - representing a "power ratio" of about 2 or so. A powerhouse for sure!

At this point KKOB is part of a huge empire that has hijacked the best national talk shows burying them if not used on KKOB (KTBL, 106.3) and with the debacle of 106.3 who would try to start a station to rival 770KKOB? We could regurgitate the mistakes at KAGM but that has gotten boring. The main thing is they didn't go long enough to make it work, the game plan wasn't good, and they bounced from plan to plan.

It will be interesting to see what stations Citadel might have to sell off and who buys these stations. If Citadel were to unload say a KTBL and 106.3 all of a sudden they wouldn't be able to buffer KKOB and if someone had the urge they could make a serious run with the nationals taken off i.e Bortz, Dr. Laura, Laura Ingrham, Don and Mike, Lykis, and all the other shows that Citadel currently uses slap in some local programming, news, traffic, and Viola you are in business.

I have to say that at this point KKOB's local shows have become all commercials, traffic, and weather. Bob Clark's show lack substance as he goes from one break to the other, while Villanucci has substance but it gets lost with the breaks. An alternative would work.

Here's what everyone is wondering. Are you one of those people who can't get names and facts straight, but shoot off your mouth anyway? Reckon so, since that what your ignorant post reveals. Get a grip. Get a life.

As far as I know the only station that have to spin here is The Buzzard.

Keep in mind that it is RUSH who gathers in an 11 share & that keeps KKOB up there, without him they would be in the 6 share range.

What do you folks think about a station that goes after the female adult consumer with shows like Clark Howard???? etc

It seems the context of my "original" post has been twisted to infer its about "ratings", or "politics". None of that came to mind.

I was commenting on the local newscasters, who have so many opportunities to give New Mexico "local" news in the segments they read following the ABC network news at the top of the hour. Instead they take the lazy way out by reading national and international stories. In most cases they present the SAME stories just presented moments before on ABC network news, oblivious to the silly duplication. ???

Surprisingly, the "overnight" news-reader (apparently a rookie) only does New Mexico/Albuquerque stories. If the rookie can do it, why can't the "A" team news readers? :-\

That's my complaint. I would turn to another station but NO other station even tries to do local radio news. (KAGM was no match)

KKOB is obviously resting on its laurels after 85 years... fat and lazy because of its powerhouse political talk show lineup. But their local news operation... its a joke!

If Arbitron was any indication, the consistant ratings winner back in the mid to late '80's was KOB-FM. Steve Hatley & Mr.Beans in morning drive, where it was "always 93 and sunny". It was also KOB-FM that gave away not one but two brand new, fully furnished homes. The station was consulted buy Chuck Knapp from the Hubbard properties in Minneapolis. With the exception of KOB-AM, nobody even came close to beating them during that era.

Yes I've heard afternoon drive, and I'm not talking about the "JIM VILLANUCCI SHOW"... I'm referring to the actual newscasts that follow ABC News. I want to hear local news .... New Mexico stories, stories that are not two days old off the AP wire (which probably gets it from the newspaper). When I'm driving home at 9:00, I only get to hear the local newscaster repeating the same national and international stories I just heard on ABC network news a minute before the commercial started. That is the LAZY attitude I refer to.

Here's the Afternoon Drive format:

ABC News at top of hour, followed 2:30 of local news. You will NEVER hear any national news within the LOCALLY-produced newscast at the top of the hour, so I don't don't what you're listening to.

At the bottom of the hour, there is usually only ONE national story (there IS no ABC News at the bottom of the hour), with the rest of the newscast filled with state and local news.

Sure it's fine during drive time... but the evening newscasts from 8pm thru 11pm, are just rehashed national stories, sometimes the same three stories that were on ABQ just minutes before.

That's the lazy crap I refer to, so you can stop defending your PM drive time. I was not attacking that portion of the programming.

However, if KKOB expects to showcase a reputation especially at night when the signal is skipping all over the southwestern US... then have the local newscaster read LOCAL news in the evenings.

Instead of being so upset over comments that were not directed at PM drive.... I challenge you to listen and hear what I'm talking about. Sometimes even the midday announcer is guilty of skating with national news instead of local...during Rush.

Bak..
It's 2007..after 7pm, where do most people get their news etc?
It seems you have a beef with KKOB in general.

It's 2007..after 7pm, where do most people get their news etc?

What a dumb statement.

If you are a News station you should be doing News of the Highest Quality 24/7 Period.

If I want local News (which all research shows people want first) and KKOB presents it's self as your local news source than that is what I expect no matter what time it is 6a, 12p 7p or 1a

Had KAGM had a regular LOCAL news segment they might have made some impact.

KKOB should have someone on staff doing local news 24/7 if not SHAME on them....even if it's recorded it should Always be LOCAL LOCAL LOCAL
Than National UNLESS it is a major story like todays shootings in VA.

RIght or wrong , that's how it's done in this market. And in many larger markets.
I agree, if you profess to be a news stations, local news should be offered round the clock. In Phoenix recently, I heard KTAR doing the same thing on local news slots..11pm, midnight and 1pm.
A sad fact of today's radio scene.

Bobby, please spare us the KAGM failings again.
It's over. No one is going to challenge KKOB because of economics.
Not viable to start from scratch and challenge the heritage station.

Hey radio pro...what's the problem with Gary Garrison, or the others doing some local readers instead of the national rip & reads in their taped newscasts? The overnight rookie (who IS live after 12am) does ALL local stories. If the "kid" can do it, why can't the "veterans"? Despite the fact you say it's done that way in "all the markets"... it's just "lazy" news anchoring..... especially when your 50 thousand watt signal is heard all over the southwestern USA.

It takes such little effort to keep it local. With the afternoon drive news being ALL local.... just simply use those same stories in the evening taped newscasts. You don't even have to rewrite them! (that's way TOO much work I'm sure!)

As far as the "live staffing", I don't care if it's recorded news, just make it relevant to New Mexico. Take some pride in what you read on the air folks!

First, I said in MANY large markets.
Second, we agree, it should be done that way.
Third, call KKOB and ask.
We can piss and moan forever, it won't change the way it's done.
