Hot AC KKPN Spins Format Wheel To Top 40
As first hinted on ALL ACCESS, CONVERGENT/CORPUS CHRISTI has spun the format wheel on Hot AC KKPN and, as of 5p (CT), the station has gone Top 40 as PLANET 102.3, CORPUS CHRISTI'S HIT MUSIC CHANNEL.

Starting out jockless for the weekend, air talent returns MONDAY at 5a with KIDD KRADDICK. At 10a it's DAVE ROSS, with 2-7p being handled by APD/MD KRIS FISHER, and 7-midnight being rocked by former KRPX night jock KAIN (now doing nights at Rocker KFRQ/McALLEN) via voicetrack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally! Corpus Christi has a hit music station again! It looks like its a PERFECT mix of POP, Hot AC, and some 90's tracks, just what it used to be back in the day from 00-02. Hope to hear it soon!

Does this mean "Stuck in the Middle With You" is back on the Top 10 list again? That song was on the top 10 list down there for 20 years since it came out until I left Corpus Christi for good. KEYS/1440 was the top 40 station down there when I left. I can't believe it wouldn't be reinstated to its top 10 spot, since I'm certain someone down there thinks it is a 'timeless' song. As I recall, what was hot in Corpus Christi was hot in the rest of the country 10 years previous. :)

Why yes, this is a little jab poking fun at Corpus Christi Radio Formats. :)

Hey Tony with all due respect Corpus has changed a lot since the 80's. Twice i worked at KZFM. 1985/Mornings and OM of KZFM/KEYS in 1989. Rarely have i seen a succesful top 40 in CC that played everything. The last time was Z-95 just before i came in as OM in 1989. I took it mostly dance and had a 20.0 ARB!
Most CHR programmers that have come to Corpus have failed with the exception of Mark Driscoll, Jerry Clifton, Lee Randall and ME.

Glad they flipped it back to mainstream CHR. At least now they aren't butting heads with crosstown Hot AC KLTG "the Beach 96.5". (Although I always liked the music mix and sound of "Planet's" Hot AC format better than "the Beach".) The only thing I wish is that they would completely re-invent the station. The "Planet" name has too much baggage and has been associated with the always changing "format of the month". It's been Hot AC, then Modern AC, then CHR, then Hot AC again, etc. They should have completely ditched the name and started fresh with a whole brand new name and image for the CHR format.
Anyway, should be interesting to see if it works. Although I tend to agree with Catfish in the above post, that mainstream CHR really doesn't seem to work in Corpus anymore. Heck, "Hot Z95" will hardly even touch dance or rhythmic pop anymore with their CHR Rhythmic format. It's all about Hip Hop now. The Latin community has really embraced the Hip Hop and Reggaeton formats and in a town as heavily Hispanic leaning as Corpus, it is hard to get them to consider listening to mainstream CHR anymore. That's why we get the "polarized" situation with all rhythmic stuff on CHR/Rhythmics and all rock leaning pop on Hot AC, with no middle ground for mainstream CHR. I would like to see it work in Corpus, but I have my doubts. If it stays, it'll probably have to start leaning one way or the other eventually.
What I think might do well in Corpus is a dance format. Maybe one of the rhythmic/Hot AC/dance formats like the "Diva" stations in Louisianna. I think dance could work in Corpus, and as I said earlier, "Z95" has basically dropped all of it in favor of all hip hop and reggaeton. If I was "Planet", I think I would try a dance flavored pop format(either more current as CHR/Pop or you could include more dance/rhythmic gold as a rhythmic Hot AC). That's where I would have gone. It could work with 20-40 something Hispanic females.
