Things around the state are almost interesting. Haha. I can't find anything on the internet about it. Hell, 98.9's website still refers to them as 'KKRK'. Got in the car today and heard The New "Star 98.9" KQQF. KGGF-FM has been dead-air all morning/afternoon. ANYBODY have any idea as to when this happened? I can't imagine how many people are upset about this. I know people as far away as Bartlesville, OK listened. Looks like Tulsa's Star 103 will be the way to go now for some people. My grandfather isn't very happy. Haha.

Back when the Earth's crust was just starting to cool down "The Mighty 690" KGGF was one of THE stations you tried to get a job with as you clawed your way up in market size in Kansas. The AM signal was a monster at 10,000 watts day and 5,000 watts at night. The only other AM in Kansas with as much power was ex-KOAM now KKOW Pittsburgh which also ran 10,000 day and 5,000 at night.
Both KGGF and exKOAM now KKOW had more power than 1330 KFH in Wichita which ran only 5,000 watts day and night and KFDI who while running 10,000 watts day only ran 1,000 watts at night. All the others were variations of 5k/1k or 1k/250w..
Seems the mighty have truly declined over the years.
Kansas seemed to get the short end of the stick when it came to the old Class I and II AM allocations. No incentive I suppose for WIBW to leave for a more powerful freq. because 5 kW on 580 did better daytime than most of the 50 kW clears above 1000 kHz. Surprised no one else ever lobbied for one of the old II-A allocations such as KRVN 880 in Nebraska.

WIBW was in that time share land grant situation for years so that explains the lack of interest. Guymon picked up a 50k recently. These days it is possible to bump some 5k day to 25 or 50k day but your still for the most part stuck with 1k at night..
The biggies did end up in Southeast Kansas for sure...

The original KWHK in Hutchinson (then 1260 AM) put in the first app for the 1210 frequency when the II-A allocations opened. 1210 was designated to go to either Kansas, Nebraska or Oklahoma. KAKE and KWHK fought a major battle with WCAU in Philadelphia over that proposal... later on KGYN, which at the time was a 1KW daytimer at 1220, submitted their application for 1210 with 10KW, and that was the one that ultimately was granted.
Under the allocations made for the II-A's 880 was allotted for use in Nebraska, North Dakota or South Dakota.
FYI, not counting the Kansas City Metro there are only six AM's in Kansas that have 5KW power at night. In addition to KGGF, KKOW, WIBW and KNSS (ex-KFH) the other two are KSAL in Salina and KVGB in Great Bend.

I forgot KVGB (always wanted to buy that place) and KSAL. From the lousy signal I received (back in the 60's and 70's) I never knew KSAL had 5kw.. Heck back then it was a BIG DEAL for me when KLEY signed on in Wellington. I left dear old Doo-Dah around 1982 and have not kept up on much happening since. I go back to the days when KWBW, KWHK, KSKU and KHUT were IT in Salt City. I remember driving to Salina and checking out 99KG when they first came on with the format way before they moved to Kraft Manor...I remeber a time when you could count all of the Wichita AM/FM stations on two hands and not really miss any ;D
I was on the air in Wichita from 1970 to around 1982 total between spaces when I was in Colorado Springs at KEDI/KCMS-FM and at KBEQ in KC. In that time frame I worked at KAKE, KWBB, KLEO, KEYN, KEYN FM and KQAM various times over that period. I spent most of my time at KEYN, I think I worked there a total of 3 times. I left KEYN-FM in 1982 and went for a career.
I did Ok, for a dumb kid from Kansas as I am fond of saying. :
