KKSF joining a band?

Anybody else heard the whispers in the hallways of Clear Channel and Citadel about the coming station swaps in San Francisco? Really Hush Hush stuff I'm told by that little bird flapping its beak! Anybody else hearing these whispers?

A swap with Citadel seems highly unlikely. There were whispers a year ago about KKSF being blown up and going rock.

Those domains were registered on May 13th! Shmooze Jazz may have lived out its life span.

The rock version of KSFX was ancient history - probably 35 years ago. After that, KSFX was soul, then disco, then KGO-FM, then light rock KLOK-FM then smooth jazz KKSF for about 20 years.
KFOG is hardly the only station playing rock around here. None of the others may be playing quite the mix of music you're looking for...but I have to ask - how many ways can the rock and roll radio pie be divided up?
Actually Rock was the last music that KSFX played before its switch to Talk KGO-FM in 1982, so it has been 27 years since they last played Rock, but even that is Ancient History. It's time to rebrand the format again. From "easy listening" to "beautiful music" to "smooth jazz" to, uh...well, let's see, "Quiet Storm" is taken. Retro lounge music is still in vogue and Mr. Lucky still gets gigs pretending to be Sinatra. Maybe call the format "cocktail music" and add some swing vocals and it's good as new. Heck, I just noticed that Matt Brubeck is in Mr. Lucky's band. http://mrlucky.org
I think there is always room on the radio for easy listening music as long as it appears hip to the listener.

I wasn't thinking of the younger hip type of FREE-FM type of Talk, rather the traditional Talk Programming for the FM Dial. KCBS is now simulcasting their AM 740 on its FM Dial so why not KNEW-910? Right now, Citadel won't buy an FM Station for a KGO-FM, but Clear Channel can start an FM Talk Station. The Younger Demographics are moving away from the AM Dial and there are many NEWS/TALK and TALK stations either moving to the FM Dial or simply simulcasting their AM on the FM Dial. Or Clear Channel can do what KMJ-FM is doing in Fresno and partially simulcast the AM Dial and do other Talk the rest of the day.1069_KIFR said:Oh please tell me that they haven't forgotten about FREE FM already!

If CC does KNEW-FM or KKGN-FM, KGO will have something to be worried about.

Music? Damn! I was so looking forward to Michael Savage in hi-fi stereo. A few highlights from the statement posted at kksf.com:
"Today marks the end of an era. KKSF-FM is no longer the Bay Area's home for Smooth Jazz. Everyone at KKSF would like to thank all the loyal fans of our station and the years of support you've given us. Over our 20 year history, you have always been there for us, and we truly appreciate it...
While this decision was extremely difficult, KKSF is taking a different path and becoming a new radio station today -- 103.7 The Band. It was made only after exhaustive market research, and extensive economic considerations (yes this is a business)..."
THIS is a sad day in the history of San Francisco radio. I can remember that important day two decades ago when Steve Feinstein put KKSF on the air. It was a bold move and unique for its time. The Wave in Los Angeles could never hold a candle to KKSF in terms of approachable smooth jazz. I was thrilled to hear what developed with KKSF and its relationship with the community and the music universe. Many a career in music was fostered by this format and all who played a role in the development of the station should be proud. As for the culture vultures who blew it up today, I am sorry for you as much as I am for the loyal listeners to the station.
Clear Channel, as purveyors of The Band, you cannot hold you head-up as anything but desperate, creative-less mechanics who know how to promote the mundane and recycle already tired music. You have the spine of the sidewinder and the vision of a blind-folded jockey riding a plow-horse backwards.
