KKUS/Tyler New Simulcasts

Heard on KKUS (The Ranch) just before 9AM this morning that they're beginning a simulcast on KCUL-AM/Marshall at noon today. Wonder if it will be a 24-hour simulcast or will KCUL-AM keep their morning news block and Open Line?

With that having been asked, whaddayabet the locals are up in arms again?

Anybody in the Marshall area or within earshot of AM1410 let us know. Thanks!

UPDATE: Just heard (9:30 AM) Tom Perryman say that starting September 15, The Ranch will be simulcast on KFRO-AM/Longview.

Am curious to see what else 15 September holds...at least for KYKX. Will we see them flip to Urban or Urban/AC?
Edited by C414 on 08/01/05 02:33 PM.

I didn't know KCUL-AM was back on the air. Last time I was up there, they were causing bad interference for 92.3 FM, so 1410 was off the air.

They don't need to simulcast on all these AM's. That's just ridiculous. There are too many stations in that area doing Classic Country right now. Surely, they can come up with something better.

Urban AC would double and maybe triple their share. You mark my word. Especially if they do it right.
______________

Apparently, whatever was plaguing the FM side was corrected. Sans Hawkins is the cluster's engineer, so I feel confident he got things back in order.

From what I've heard about KFRO-AM, simulcasting The Ranch has GOT to be better than what's going on with them now.

KCUL-AM is (or was, the last time I was through there) still doing a morning local/state news block followed by "Open Line" (their version of SwapShop). Don't know if that will continue after they fiip to simulcasting The Ranch or not. If Access.1 discontinues all local programming for KCUL-AM, you know that KMHT wil have a heyday with it.

Ever since I heard KMHT wound up with Marshall ISD sporting events, I've felt that might be nails in KCUL's coffin as we know it. MISD was a huge part of KCUL's draw. With that having been gone, that probably left them scrambling to recover. Guess that simulcasting KOYE/Frankston on the FM side and now KKUS/Tyler on the AM side is their answer.

This is an armchair observation, but it would seem to me that they'd make more money by simulcasting The Ranch on KCUL-FM because of the better signal. I would think, especially as successful as classic country has been for The Ranch, it would be more of an advertising draw for them to put The Ranch on the 6kW FM signal. With that having been said, that's probably why the Regional Mexican (or whatever it is now) is on the FM. Makes sense to me either way.

I can't think of which Urban station is in SHV, but you're right. From what I've heard about it, if they use the same formula for KYKX, it would give The Blaze a run for its money.

The last time I heard KCUL-AM was Sunday as I was driving by. It sounded quite good, but wasn't country. I've heard the same story about KFRO-AM and The Ranch. Making that sound good will be a bigger challenge, but I'm sure it can be done.

KCUL AM was playing classic country this afternoon signal was weak but I couldn hear in Atlanta a good 40 miles away. I used to listen to the Ranch all the time when there on 103.1

This is a smart move on Access 1's part. They get the coverage they need, and really...with the fidelity (or lack thereof) of much of the classic country, they don't really need an FM stick. Sure, FM would be a selling point, but probably not a very effective one. It will always be a challenge selling a station whose strongest demo is 55+. A simulcast on the AM would certainly be cheaper.

As for the KYKX flip to an Urban format, I wouldn't hold my breath. Word I'm hearing is that The Bull will make the flip to Urban AC.

It's a good but not a great move by Access one. KCUL has AM competition from Shreveport's KWKH which is live and local during the day. I hope they will keep that morning local programming.

The Ranch is a improvement over whats on KFRO-AM right now, but like KWKH its going to be hard to get country listeners used to FM to flip to AM unless they promote it and get that transmitter back to full strength.

I caught KCUL-AM running ABC's Pure Gold a few weeks ago. 1410 beams strongly northeast, almost like someone in Longview years ago kept them from broadcasting there. It's a highly directional signal for a small 500w station.
Edited by Billy G on 08/03/05 06:55 AM.
