Not sure whether this is smart move or more of radio's classic "xerox" strategy. On one hand, WOLF seems to be Entercom's flavor of the month ... done well in Portland and Sea; but on the other hand SFO has been without country for quite awhile... and that COULD be because the appetite for the format isn't that strong there.
Not a knock on the PEOPLE who are going to execute ... just have a lot of frustration that radio LOVES to grab some concept that takes off in one part of the country (see "Rhythmic Oldies", "JACK", "Movin", "WOLF") and assume that it's the blanket answer everywhere.
Microsoft has always been good at standing up and bragging about their success....but basically all their key products are borrowed from OTHER successes. WORD took off because it displaced WordPerfect ... Excel displaced 1-2-3, etc. Not that they don't have a REASON to take credit for making those products better; but they didn't invent the concepts but still I'd bet most people assume they did. So for owners to jump into each market and light a short-term fire by putting in the flavor-du-jour leaves the same questionable taste in my mouth. Nice that they can make it work....but I'm still not all that quick to award bonus points on the INNOVATION front!! Entercom's success in Seattle, for example, was pretty much already in place as each station was acquired. KISW already known for ROCK, END was going alternative before Entercom acquired, KBSG already successful oldies under Viacom. Bumping their original property, KBRD to The Mountain was a home-grown success, but isn't that more of a tribute to Chris Mays than to the national programming leadership?
Again ... I don't mean to imply that I hope this isn't successful. I just hope folks have done their homework about WHY SanFran has gone so long without decent country station before they break out the generic liner cards and insert "Bay Area" where "Puget Sound" used to be.
