Hey

What do you guys think of KKXT so far? I think the playlist is far much better than the other AAA formats we had in the past. Any thoughts?

KXT has been the #1 preset on all my radios since I moved back to DFW in January. I have pledged twice and have 2 t-shirts and a water bottle to prove it. I'm thankful\grateful we have KXT.

Same old complaints... processing too bright, music too lame. I want to like this station, but just don't.
The pre-set is still there, but rarely used.
I will deal with my disappointment, and wish them well.

I'm listening now. Putumayo at noon on Wednesday? Who's brilliant idea was that? This station is clearly too hip for the room. They need a PD with at least some sense of programming. What I'm hearing now indicates a lack of a cume strategy and a general misunderstanding of how to amass an audience, which is supported by that resounding .2 share 6+ and 109,000 cume. This is Market #5. Hire a PD for god's sake!

I LOVE it 70% of the time.

Some of the stuff (not a majority by any means) is pretty good. Some is listenable. Some makes me click over to Jack 100.3. And some is just flat unlistenable. (Although they did play a Neko Case song this morning - "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth" [a cover of a Sparks song] that was pretty cool, and I've heard some stuff from the Weepies that was not bad.)

Agree that they need a PD. It sounds like somebody just took a bunch of NPR music shows and threw them on the air (that way they don't have to pay for on-air talent).

I like the locally originated music segments. Do think they play a bit too much syndicated stuff in prime dayparts, but I enjoy the depth of the playlist. I've seen AAAs that got really bland, so KXT's mix is pretty appealing.

The syndicated stuff I think is pretty good. Shows like World Cafe & UnderCurrents. These 2 shows plays some good music.

The parent organization of KKXT is in major financial trouble, a situation has existed since the very beginning of the concept of acquiring the 91.7 property. The organization arranged for a 17+ million dollar interest-only loan to fund the purchase. Many of the covenents required by the lender(s) have never been in compliance. There's now talk of the loan being called for default. Part of the overall debt/expense problem is the massive expense from the operation of several KERA-FM translators, some of which I've been told are not even currently operating due to the phone company cutting off the transmission links for non-payment. Can anyone confirm this?

This is a very unfortunate situation. I was SO hopeful for KKXT's success, something that had the potential to pump some new life into DFW radio. If ONLY they could sound more like KGSR they might actually reap more badly needed "listener support"...and survive. Sadly, I don't think they will make it...even in the short run.

I suspect the above is the reason for airing so much NPR material...keeping the outfow of cash they don't have to an absolute minimum.

The translator in Sherman was reported on this board as being heard on July 17th and I heard the one in Tyler a couple of weeks ago, too. I don't know about the one in Wichita Falls. The last I checked there were no requests for "silent" STA's for any of them, for what that might be worth. But the phone thing is interesting; seems to me that they probably could get an over the air signal from KERA for two or maybe all three of those translators.

KXT is refreshing and I like it. I know quite a few people who like it. My only complaint is that the playlist is a little too broad. Don't get me wrong, the variety is great, but sometimes it gets a bit hard to stay engaged. I don't necessarily want it to sound like a commercial AAA but the playlist could be slightly less random.

From day one, I believe the only original programming has come from come from Gini and Joe while the rest have been NPR shows. For us music nerds, there's no such thing as "too broad" and we don't about your "CUME strategy." While driving around today in my wife's car (no satellite, no iPod), Undercurrents was a wonderful option to have.

Wow.

I was under the impression that NTPB was one of the few pubcasters that wasn't financially strapped. WNET, WQED and WGBH, all of which are leading lights in that realm, are not doing well in terms of money and have cut back considerably.

So things are now as rough with the KERA organization, too? That's surprising because for a number of years, KERA was among the stronger pubcasters. That in itself was somewhat surprising considering that D/FW's conservatism is not prone to favor non-commercial broadcasters (unlike the Bay Area or the Twin Cities).

Bob, there's a lot of half- or un-truths in the post above about KERA's financial condition. I hear they have had to deal with the economic downturn just like everyone else in public (and commercial) broadcasting, but they've been in the black for a number of years - all their financials are public, so it's not hard to verify that.

And it seems like all their translators are trucking along just fine, so not sure where that poster got that information.

Judging by all the posts from the 9,000+ fans on KXT's Facebook page, they are building a devoted following. I hope it succeeds - D/FW really needs a station like that. As a listener, I really appreciate what they're doing.

KERA is throwing its money away with the Sherman translator. The main 90.1 signal is clearer and stronger than the 99.3 translator in the middle of the town (as long as there's not any tropo and 90.1's not being stepped on by the Houston station.)

Note to KKXT... please don't try to please me by playing familiar hits and AOR standards.
Don't let the petty griping of anonymous posters on Radio-Info affect your programming choices. Just play the best music you can find. But please fix the processing and the AM section on the transmitter to give a clearer and less distorted sound.
