KLAC Sports to FLIP soon?

I was on twitter and Brooks Melchior of sportsbrooks posted this:

SPORTSbyBROOKS "Hearing LA sports radio station 570am may flip formats. Apparently ratings, revenue plummeted after losing Lakers PBP rights."

That's a shame. I really enjoyed the station when it was a local sports station with the Lakers. Btw love the site & hope to contribute when I can.

What would they flip to?

Good question. Clear already has conservative talk on 640 and liberal talk on 1150. Sports is the only other viable AM format.

I doubt that. Aren't they the Fox Sports Radio flagship? I know hot talk won't work... besides other FSR stations aren't doing too hot on ratings either (WDFN Detroit has about a 0.6 rating, KLSD San Diego has a 0.8 rating and KGME Phoenix has a 0.7 rating).

I was afraid this would happen before year's end (2009). Clear Channels seems to like blowing up stations around holidays. So I figured December could be the end. Anyway, there's a lot of good people over there. Sucks if it's ultimately true....

"What fools these Mort Halls be."

Oops, sorry...wrong era, wrong manager, wrong format.

Right station though. ;)

What fools these Mort Halls be................A Dick Haynes line when KLAC automated. I forget what year, was it around 1957 ?

KLAC is the Fox Sports radio Flagship station. I dont see them flipping it anytime soon. most of the LA based FSR Stuff i think is based out of the studios of KLAC. if KLAC Flipped where would the LA Based FSR Stuff broadcast out of. And if CC is gonna flip KLAC due to low ratings. when is Disney gonna flip KSPN from Sports due to its low ratings With the lakers. from the November PPM's to the December PPM's. KSPN lost 0.4 of its ratings. so KSPN should flip soon to by the terms of the KLAC Flip

Most likely out of the Premiere complex in Sherman Oaks where more than a few FSN shows have broadcast from before.

If I'm not mistaken only 3 shows broadcast out of the KLAC studios in Burbank, Myers & Hartman, PMS and Tony Bruno. The rest of the programming is done out of the Premiere Radio Networks studios in Sherman Oaks. Fox Sports Radio would become like Sporting News Radio in that they would still be L.A. based, but with no flagship station. SNR has their studios in Santa Monica, but they have no L.A. affiliate.

Don Barrett posted this yesterday on LARadio.com:

KSPN/KLAC: KSPN became the Lakers station in November and the numbers show it. KSPN has taken the leadership position in the Sports battle in Los Angeles as they have what appears to be the premier sports franchise in the marketplace. KSPN’s 25-54 numbers have nearly tripled since the start of the year.

Just more Sports by Brooks - I'm not even good enough to be an update guy on LA radio b/s.

ESPN may have better numbers with the Lakers, but the idiotic amount of rights fees they paid make it a financial loser for Disney. They also have USC sports to carry and I'm sure mens and women's basketball numbers are through the roof!

ESPN barely beats KLAC even with Lakers and USC, so the amount of money 570 is saving by not paying those ridiculous rights fees more than makes up for the ratings and revenue difference: hence the 5 hours of pre and post games shows to try to make up for the losses.

This rumor is just b/s since Fox just re-upped with Premiere for the naming rights and I'm sure Ruppert Murdock didn't sign another check to not have LA as part of the network. Both stations are pretty much all syndicated and at least 570 is LA driven on its national shows, unlike the New York and east coast slant of the Bristol based. Sorry Brooks, stick to posing with Hooters girl on your website.

Correct. Stephen A. is coming from New York City, Dan Patrick's at his fancy studio in Connecticut, JT The Brick is from Premiere in Sherman Oaks. And if you want to throw Jim Rome in, he's also at Premiere.

I'm surprised Tony Bruno is coming from KLAC considering Clear Channel is not his employer.

Bruno was broadcasting out of the Westwood One studios before FSR added his show back to the lineup. No reason for his syndicator to continue to pay for studio time there.
Too bad that Bruno chooses to have no on-air interaction with FSR update guy Tomm Looney, a truly talented broadcaster who's completely wasted as the sidekick of the insipid JT the Brick.
FSR is paying Brick a lot of money for broadcasting to an audience of mostly owls & crickets. Isn't that guy's contract up soon?

The Post-Jim-Rome show show programming feeds a dozen other Clear Channel markets, so I doubt it is going anywhere

wonder if that fraud Brooks will admit he was wrong when this latest b/s rumor turns out to be totally wrong. Sounds like he's on the ESPN payroll and desperately trying to get a job as a weekend update schlub. All he seems to do is kiss ESPN ass and spread inaccurate drivel about any other LA station. LAME!

CBS Radio should've flipped KFWB to a sports station. I'm sure that would've done well.
