KLAK move-in.. targets Collin county

Dallas Morning News story headline:

"New radio station says it'll be dialed into Collin
McKinney: KLAK 97.5 FM is sure local focus will give it an edge"

can be found at this link:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...cradio_24cco.ART.North.Edition2.1a79696a.html

The upshot is that the station will still run AC music, but it will have news, weather and traffic that's focused on Collin county instead of Grayson county.
The studios will now be in McKinney instead of Denison. (I think they are still in the Katy depot??)

I have never seen an arbitron book for Grayson county, but KLAK would have to be one of the top stations in Sherman-Denison. I have no problem with focusing a station on Collin county. I've advanced that exact idea on this forum several times over the years. However, I'm not keen on taking away a popular local voice in the Sherman-Denison area.

Any thoughts?

Yes, they have been broadcasting from studios in the Katy depot, where they share space with co-owned KMKT and KMAD, both of which will continue to serve Grayson County.

I think we're going to have to see how they manage this transition. With the station's tower moving south by perhaps 15 miles, KLAK will continue to put a strong signal into the Sherman-Denison area and will (I suspect) continue to be a dominant station in that area. As a result, I suspect that they'll continue to get advertisers from Grayson County. And with Collin and Grayson county "growing together" will new subuurban development in places like Van Alstyne and Melissa, I really think it would make sense to provide at least some news and coverage of events in both counties.

It'll certainly take time for the station to establish itself in Collin county, so they'll have to keep some reliance on their Northern roots. I hate the thought of Sherman-Denison losing still another local station, especially one like K-Lake that well served the local community.

Eye Lipson - original K-Lake consultant and namer of the station.

I think that the signal of 990amwould be good coverage for Collin County. Now the question becomes---Will it get an owner who knows what do???
By the way EYE, I still think that the CAFE format was a winner. With the right backing it would be a hit.

I agree! I have been working on that format for 9 years - ever since I left the Ticket.
Am still out there pitching the concept. I think broadcasters are finally getting the idea and realizing that it could be a big money-maker. Hope to be able to bring it to life.

I listened to the CAFE for the few days it was on. It was amazing to me the amount of callers that they had the first day. On all the shows, even the morning show. The billboards were a hoot. I hope that it finds a place to live. It is something new for radio, and god forbid that something new is tried. Good luck EYE.

I too listened for at least an hour each of the three days of the format. It was the best thing I'd heard on AM since the music died. I hope you're able to bring Katie Pruett back on board when it takes off. Meanwhile, I bet I can find at least two, maybe three bucks in seed money in the sofa cushions -- I'll see if I can PayPal it to you. :)
