"Klassic KOOL"?

I vaguely remember a return of "Klassic KOOL"-- though it was new to me. It had to have happened sometime 2004+.

Does anybody remember it, or when it happened?

I believe it was every weekday evening, 11pm-midnight. It was during Dave Shannon's shift, but I remember it with Allie Torres. Maybe Dave was on vacation when I listened. Most of the time I should have been asleep, but I... at least didn't have to listen through a pillow (but I did listen to other things at night on the AM dial). :)

I probably didn't listen to this a whole lot, but enough that I noticed roughly 15 past the hour, they'd be playing an instrumental oldie.

I can't come up with an exact time frame--circa 2006 perhaps?--
but I remember Klassic KOOL running 9-10 PM on Thursdays as a
part of Dave Shannon's show.

We could check back pages of the Tanim Board and look for KOOL
threads where the Old Gringo is screaming "No! The demos!" ;)

Lauren:

By any chance do you remember the name of that instrumental? I've been seeking a song that for me only exists in my head, but I recall it was used extensively in the early 70s, sometimes as bumper music but also making an appearance on air in it's entirety from time to time.

I have not even a snip of a recording and can't play a lick of it on any musical instrument, yet I can hear it in my head as plain as day.

I don't think Lauren means that they played the SAME instrumental oldie every night at 15 past the hour, just that they played AN instrumental oldie at that time of the hour.
That said, a list of 1970-72 instrumental hits includes:
"Popcorn"--Hot Butter
"Joy"--Apollo 100
"Outa-Space"--Billy Preston
I'm sure there are others--anyone?

If it helps, the song I am thinking of had a Steve Cropper-like guitar and the chorus had a great horn section.

Ah, yes, Klassic KOOL. From my memory, this was a Lee Bortell thing. It was 9pm, and started as an every night thing if I remember correctly. I actually remember him filling in during the drive shift one week and would still do Klassic KOOL during the 9pm hour. Liz Boyle was filling in and would "sit back and enjoy the music" that hour. At some point, it was cut back to one day per week.

What made you think of Klassic KOOL?

By Steve Cropper I assume you mean a rather funky guitar sound,
although when you say "chorus" I'm sidetracked--since it is an
instrumental. Perhaps you mean a riff that repeats several times
during the song? So how about...

Scorpio
Dennis Coffey And The Detroit Guitar Band

Debut 10/30/71, peaked at #6 in early 1972
(Billboard, courtesy Joel Whitburn).

You can probably find excerpts of the song on various sites.

It's not 'Time is tight' Part of my personal music collection consists of pretty much everything Stax records ever put out and the song I seek is not among them.

Scorpio wasn't it either, but was still a good song.

How exactly does one describe an instrumental in print?

I could whistle or hum it but that does me no good here.

If you could sing a couple of the lyrics, Nurse Jeff and I'd probably be able to name the instrumental ::)

Ah yes, "Scorpio"...how did I overlook that one? Especially since it was recycled as a 'sample' in "Bust A Move"(1989). Hopefully Young MC didn't rip Dennis Coffey off and actually paid him for the use of the song!
Back to the guessing game: "TSOP"?

Okay, while we're talking about instrumentals we don't know the name of....there was one with an organ or synthesizer and there's a guy-not singing along, but saying something about "the great ww? New York". I think it was a very cool radio jingle that became a hit. They used to play it at the Highway 39 drive-in between movies. circa,'71. Please-name that tune, would love to hear it again!

I could take a trip out to the Buckeye Media Hut and hum it for you if you think it would help.

Longshot: "Double Barrel"--Dave and Ansel Collins, summer '71. "I...am the magnificent! W--O--O--O!" Don't recall the 'toaster' in this slice of dub reggae saying anything about New York ,though...

That's it!!!! Thanks, 99KTKT! I don't know where I got the "New York".

Woooo! I still got it! ;D
Yes, "Double Barrel" is certainly a one-of-a-kind 'forgotten oldie'. I'll have to go dig it out. Think I still have the 45 on Big Tree records...
