Any word on what is going on at KLAZ, and why he would leave to go to US Stations?

I think he will enjoy it, Craig, Gary, and Bob are great guys to work for.

Even though Hot Springs is a small market, it is competitive, and some of you know that I am one hell of a competitive guy.

The format's been tightened up and the website is looking a hell of a lot better. Keith Michaels is shaking out the cobwebs.

As for the departures, there's always going to be someone unhappy when program directors change. Just the nature of the beast.

One thing I know about Keith, he's not the kind to come in and roll heads for the fun of it.

Gee, I don't know who on the staff would actually be upset with Phil's departure, except for Phil. It's been a long, long, time in coming. What the heck are the folks at US Stations thinking? Sure, he's very entertaining on air, however, the drama off air should have been considered. I have been very impressed to date with the management and ownership of US Station, however, tonight I am shaking my head in astonishment. Good luck guys...it's going to be a bumpy year. Get read you guys should start growing eyes in the back of your head.

Congrats goes out to Noalmark. You guys have picked pitchfork and cleaned out a very dirty barn. I'm sure it hasn't been pleasant for anyone involved but you both have an awesome market to work with and I envy your ownership.

You would do well with the morning position since you're young enough. The rest of us are toooooo old for CHR. I'm just wondering, however, about the choice in moving away from Hot AC and more toward CHR. Sure, it's going to increase the numbers in the book but will the advertisers in Hot Springs really appreciate the clientele that's brough in from the advertising. I've got a feeling there's lots more to all this and I'm so glad I'm not there in the middle. It's fasinating to watch from the sidelines.

with the "format change" at klaz phil was on the way out anyways. he was too upset at not becoming the next GM and there was no way he was going to play nice with the new GM and PD.....lotsa luck with the move, i hope you give him everything he wants or be prepared to deal with the consequences

Matt Mosler-I'm glad someone finally realized that weather guys shouldn't be doing political commentary on rock stations. NOT that I disagreed with his politics but geeez, it used to drive me crazy.

Doc-really talented guy and I really hated to see them let him go. I don't know or want to know the details. I only wish I had half his talent

Sean Caldwell-well, if you're moving more toward CHR I certainly agree with this discision as well.

Joann Loy-You mean the Queen of Trade? LMAO!!! Seriously folks, it takes actual cash to make a radio station work. You can trade out everything. But, I have to admit, I really enjoyed my $75 a month trade allowance in fake nails and toenails when I was up there. Sure, trade can be fun for the employees but dangerous to the bottom line.

Eddie-Have you ever really liked a person for who he is but have very little respect for him as a manager? My heart goes out to him and hope and prays he gets healthy.

Phil-just plain sad.

I'm am however pleased to learn Larry Morphew is still up yonder. I think he will be perfect on EZ. He's a great guy with a lot of knowledge. Hold on to that gem! And, Aaron has the love the game!

Well then...you did something incredible guys! You can't go wrong with DBT. Everything I ever learned about radio Dave taught me years ago in Little Rock. David is solid as a rock and one of the most entertaining people on the air and off. He's a look you in the eye and shoot it to you straight kind of fellow. He has been underutilized for several years and it's going to be pure joy to hear him on the air in Hot Springs.

I enjoy my job greatly, along with the hours.

Being on Air in market #74 is fun, but so is being surrounded by Mountains and Lakes.

Someone great needs to help get KLAZ's morning show ratings up big time.

A morning show gig at a tightly run station in an attractive small market with independent ownership should attract plenty of applicants. One thing I can say first hand is that there are plenty of talented people in big markets who would be happy to get off the Corporate radio merry go round and work at a place where you can do good radio and make decent money.

The big markets operate on a totally bifurcated system: a handful of hand picked "stars" make all the money, while everyone else is just a replacable commodity.

I wouldn't be surprised if KLAZ gets a boat load of good applicants. Now whether they can finish the deal and get the right person or persons for the gig...aye there's the rub!

I was wondering why my ears where burning! Thanks txradiochick for the kind words. I wish I still had the other half of that talent of Doc Bryce! lol

As for privately owned versus corporate, I have had better luck working for a corporate station. The last three privately owned stations I've worked for I've been relieved of my duties. KTLR cause they sold the station, and that was back in the day when anyone could intern. KSKY cause of deregulation of '96. They didn't want anyone with a license, non-licensed people would work for less money, and KFCD cause they went bankrupt. The USA Radio Network, as far as they know I'm still working there even though I haven't shown up in 2 years. I still have access to the building. USA Radio I did volunteer when Marlin Maddox was still alive. Great place to get experience working at the network level.

As for corporate, I've only been fired once because I was full-time. All the other times was because I left to go to another station for more pay and benefits. I made the same amount as an engineer for Noalmark as I did working part time flying in a helicopter reporting traffic for corporate. When you're on the beach, you have time to evaluate the differences where you've been. If I weren't for a special lady living in Hot Springs, I would have bought my plane ticket 2 weeks ago and high tailed it out of here. Even working part-time for corporate, I still did over 40 hours a week. Granted, you're not supposed to work over 36, but we did the old banking of hours program to off set the difference. I know illegal as hell, but it was a win/win for everyone involved. Corporate is actually starting to not look so bad!

As for reality, I'm going to stick around town for now, set up shop and do VO work out of the house. So far I've got two people signed on that want me to produce their spots exclusively. Not enough to pay the rent right now, but good enough to keep my production room up and running! I can do everything out of here short of a phone patch. Anyone looking for an extra voice or VT, I work cheap! Very cheap! Dirt Cheap! Hell, I'll give it away if it undercuts someone else lol. Luckily I have an electrical trade to fall back if I need to remain here till something better comes along. AT&T is even looking good!

As for the real reason I was fired.... I'm still under contract not to talk about that till after the 1st of October. Email me, and I'll share the audio tapes! I'm kidding, I just said that to get a rise out of someone who might be reading, but I really am under contract not to talk about till after the first!

It's the old story of the grass always being greener, isn't it, Doc? I think the lesson for everyone is that there is no "ideal" way to run a radio station. There are some unique advantages to both corporate and independently owned stations.

Ultimately, it's up to each of us to do our due diligence and figure out which situation is the best for each of us. We're all different (and some us in radio are really different) and there's no one size fits all answer to which way is the best.

Best of luck, with your V-O work. It's a crowded field, but there's always room for people with talent.

The grass is always greener on the other side when you're getting kicked in the kidneys till Christmas! Anything is better than where you are when you're currently getting the verbal beating.

The grass is what you make of it. It can always be green on your side of the fence if you maintain it. Never hurts though to steal a few patches of sod from the neighboring yard either! Radio is just like any other job you can find out there. Show up on time, do what's expected, and go home when they're done with you. Then again, radio is a lifestyle, not a job. If you just rolled your eyes or have no idea what I'm talking about, you need not apply or abandon your position now!

The difference between being a whiny bitch, and bitching about it? Being a whiny bitch is when you just boo hoo about the problem and don't do anything about. Bitching about it is voicing your dissatisfaction while distributing your resume to the next potential employer.

The grass that you stand on is what you make of it. I have some brown spots in my fence line, but it's nothing I can't fix removing sod from next door to make mine look better

Anybody got any udpated reaction to the new Big Daddy/Heidi show? Now that they've been on a little while, it sounds like the show is tightening up and they're playing off each other very well. Keith's big strength is playing straight man and making his partner sound great. No telling what the actual numbers are, but it's obvious they've built a strong phone following. They've also gotten just a bit closer to the edge with some of their material. Nothing scandalous, but definitely edgier.

Overall, it sounds like a plus, but it's hard to replace a show that's been in one place for a long time, even a mediocre one. From what I can tell the old show wasn't bad at all, but the new mix definitely gives Heidi a bigger role and should draw more females over the long term. An intangible is the constant promoing. That goes a long way toward building a long term base.

Just my humble opinion and your mileage may vary.
