KLBJ News

The entire KLBJ-AM news operation is great! Jarrod Allen, Steven Pickering, Emily Trube, just to name a few. It's could be the best newsteam in Texas. It is the best newsroom to work for in the country.

Agreed, but unfortunately saying they're the best radio newsteam in Texas these days is faint praise! ;D

The biggest problem with the folks over at KLBJ AM is that they don't have enough airtime during the morning and afternoon drive. Two minutes at the top and bottom of the hour just don't cut it, especially given the "talent" that surrounds them.

I worked there before ''dereg.''
We had 11 people in the news department.
We had beat reporters covering the state capitol, county, city, crime, business, etc.
We did 4 hours of news-- not talk-- in the morning and 2-1/2 hours in PM drive.
Other hours we ran the full 6 minutes of CBS news followed by 5 minutes local at the top of the hour.
And back then the news team also produced full drive time newscasts for KLBJ-FM.
I recall the FM folks weren't too pleased with the length of the FM news. Off-air they called them ''news blimps.''

Of course before dereg everybody did news and together we gave Austin an all-news station. You just had to keep turning the dial.

I worked there during the dereg period and watched it change from full news in the morning, noon and afternoon drive to mostly syndicated talk with some local. I was gone right before the top and bottom of the hour 24/7 days. I am impressed with the job they do considering the radio world today. I would like to see more local talk during the week, but overall they have maintained a pretty good product. Who knew that Jeff Ward would do so well?
