Ok...
I've worked at KLBK (and KAMC), and have run the audio during the news. Audio is the job of the person running the audio board. The Anchors have nothing to do with that (unless they jump their cue, or ad-lib off the script). Occasionally, the Anchor will unexpectedly put the wrong (or bad) microphone clip on, but this should never happen, because the audio person should ask for microphone checks for the production on the floor.
The problems you heard are likely the fault of a new or inattentive production staff. Very often KLBK/KAMC will start a new crew just before a new newscast debuts.
As for the looks of the anchor people, this should not matter, but unforutnately it does. KLBK is going for a fast paced, young look. It's funny, that used to be the focus of the sister staion, KMAC. Not anymore.
That's not to say it's a great newscast either. But in my view, 2 things make a great newscast. First, you have to have a strong news staff. One thing KLBKAMC is guilty of, is running a couple of stale local stories at the top of the broadcast, and repeating a bunch of AP or network packages the rest of the newscast. KCBD doesn't do this, except for the 5pm newscast. Second, is the graphics, and this is where KLBKAMC have the advantage over KCBD. The problem is, when you rely too much on graphics and music, the novelty wears thin. I think KAMC has the best mix of both, but still lags behind KCBD in serious news coverage.
