KLCK 98.9 Turning to FM Sports

My only question is how long "Rock 98-9" will be just that...

So far, music is decent, and the voice guy (forgot his name but he does monster truck spots nationally) is awesome.

I bet the folks at Met Tower are getting the C+D forms filled out right now. They might have a case considering KISW has been "The Rock of Seattle" since the 70's and often adds the "Rock" script to their logo.

I'm smelling another rock war heating up. Not like KISW/KZOK in the 80's or as intense as KXRX/KISW. This one will not be fought not with sabotaging jocks, but with men in suits headed to the county courthouse!

A cease & desist letter based on the word "Rock?" Doubtful. Any law student can argue both fair use and public domain.

Had KISW ever called itself "Rock 99.9," there could be a case in trying to sidestep a name, but KISW has always called itself that - KISW. Just using the word "Rock" as an accessory to brand yourself and describe the music you play doesn't provide exclusive rights to that word.

To me the real test is going to be the music. Are they simply going to duplicate the KISW playlist song for song, or will they mix it up with songs and artists they feel the competition is ignoring.

KISW plays three songs an hour in mornings and afternoons, that's probably what Hubbard is going to try and exploit. That will force Entercom to choose between more music in mornings and afternoons or risk losing audience to people who want to hear music.

And I agree; nobody is going to get a copyright on the term Rock.

I think the rub won't be about the exact term "Rock". It would have to do with exclusivity of "Rock" prominently used in a long-established logo and slogan.

Entercom *could* argue that KISW has used the term "Rock" in logos and station imaging long enough that in Seattle "Rock" used by itself + radio = KISW to most people. Then again, I am neither a radio GM nor a law expert :)

However, I can certainly tell you it's an unusual situation. Pretty much all the imaging says "Rock 98.....9" so it's enough of a similarity to the ears that somebody said "We don't want someone confusing us with KISW"

Anyway, as mentioned, they are looking for a PD. Which one of us will apply?

Rock 98.9 could be interesting. Take a few points away from longtime leader KISW...hopefully their playlist isn't stale already and maybe there will be some good rock cuts that play on this station. If you make the station stale, KISW wins. If you make the station energetic with music and personalities that engage the listener, then KLC...KVRQ will inch closer to taking points away from 99.9. But get into too much '80s and '90s rock and you run close to KZOK with the playlist.
With KIRO-710 doing well usually in the PPM, I doubt FM sports would come to Seattle.

I wouldn't think that KISW would be terribly worried about this flip. Even if KISW added a music-heavy afternoon show, listeners would be up in arms over the loss of The Men's Room. KVRQ doesn't have The Mens Room or The BJ Shea Show (but of course, that is an obvious fact).

Stale Playlist list. Are they not already playing music that has been played over and over the years. I gave them a quick sample from work to back home. Only took two songs before I was home and that's about 10 minutes with no deer in the road. At least it didn't sound over processed.

It will be interesting to see how 98.9 treats drive times, offering more music versus more talk or sports for the target audience they are going for.

Then again maybe Steve Sandmeyer after noon drive?

My only problem with the playlist is the fact that some of it seems close to iheart's new Alt 102.9.

I disagree. A lawsuit is likely coming. Aside from the calls and the frequency, the only word that has ever appeared in KISW's logo for many, many years is "Rock."

The new music format reminds me of how KISW sounded before that station segued to Active Rock. New Mainstream Rock launches often have difficulty finding success, although 100.7 in San Diego seems to be performing great so far.

It's these pointless discussions that made me leave the boards the first time. Ugh...

Either way, I would think that before they named the station they would have done their research. I'd be surprised if any lawsuit comes out of it.

Well, I was hoping for a sports station, but I can live with a rock station.

Who said I'm not a majority listener? Bongwater is the one who likes hippie rock.

Actually, that's "indie rock", not hippie rock. BIG difference.

So far I am enjoying the mix on the new Rock 98.9. A Seattle Station that will play "Never Been Any Reason" by Head East, "Love Removal Machine" by The Cult, and "Gone Away" by The Offspring in the same stop set is pretty dang cool!
