KLCK Changes Format Hires Airstaff

Hit the KLCK button on my FM and was surprised to hear Kelly Clarkson followed by a live talent. Seems the station has gone live and local, which I applaud. When was the last time that happened? They have definitely changed format. Music is very different sounding a lot like the old Gen-X 104.9 that Clear Channel ran. Lots of KISS and STAR sounding songs mixed with some 90's. When did they change format from their Alternative/AAA sound? They used to play Florence and the Machine, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Bush, Black Keys. The songs I heard today in order were Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Matchbox 20 and Pink. Very much like the old CC Genx. I thought at first maybe they picked up the satellite format, but the talent was live and local.

With KMTT moving to older classic rock I would have thought KLCK's AAA lean would have picked up new listeners. Instead they have young air talent and a more pop station competing with KISS, Movin and STAR. Didn't work for Genx 104.9, but maybe with a better signal it will have a chance.

Regardless of the format change, it is encouraging to hear they have hired local talent in this radio economy. Didn't recognize any of the talent on their website. Were they hired from out of town?

Their format musically was the only thing they really had going for it (could've lived without the repeat-mania they had in their first few months. Getting an airstaff early on would have helped in a BIG way.) But now with Kelly Clarkson and other (YAWN!) bland Matchbox Twenty AC pop in the mix, it looks like they're trying to be a second-run to KPLZ.

Do we REALLY need ANOTHER Star 101.5 THAT badly? And what about KRWM? Are they going to go softer/older?

Yawn on KLCK. I haven't listened to 98.9 since the switch from Smooth Jazz to "Modern Music". KWJZ, even though many people called it "Snooze Jazz", and I didn't, was a great SJ station! I've been currently streaming the new WLOQ in Orlando (102.5) since they and another SJ station in PA switched.

I just listened after seeing this thread and it sounds like one of there playlist updates they do about every 3 months. First they sounded like a hot AC/Alternative Rock hybrid, then pretty much streight up alternative with some tripple A mixed in in about March, in June they went back to more of a modern AC sound, and then in September not sure what they did, but they made there way onto the Alternative Rock pannel, although I didn't notice much of a change, and if I did, it was towards hot AC. Now they've gone even more in that direction. Wait another 3 months and see what they'll do.

Mr.Shorts kinda has a weird thing when it comes to KPLZ so I am not surprised he's trying to go head-to-head again. He also tried when KLSY evolved into more of a HotAC product. Maybe if he won a book he could put that obsession to rest!

Doesn't KPLZ bill as consistently one of the top 5 in the market? That does seem like a logical place to take your station- follow the money.

KLCK has always been an Alternative/Hot AC hybrid - I think what's changed is the proportion of Alt. vs. HAC music in their playlist - they started out about 50/50 (Alt/HAC), then shifted way towards Alternative (and joined the Alt. panel on Mediabase) - now by adding back in the Kelly Clarkson, Gavin DeGraw, etc., they're back to about 50/50

Ratings are down to a 1.7 though, so something's going wrong - what bothers me is that they play extremely esoteric "Alternative" tracks, most of which have a dance lean, and many of which don't even make the Alternative Top 40

There are Alternative/Hot AC hybrids that are working well in other parts of the country, such as 96X/Norfolk and KUCD/Honolulu - and the difference between those stations and Click is those stations play Hot AC mixed with Alternative hits, rather than Hot AC mixed with Indie techno-Alt.
