KLIF 570 IBOC after dark...

Noticed last night about 10:30PM that 570 was still running their HD. I wonder if they were testing, running it to see if anyone complains or ?? Anyway that's the first AM station I've heard with HD at night since the rule changed.

I recently could hear what sounded like morse code every few minutes after dark faintly in the background, but wasn't sure if it was KLIF or coming from somewhere else. Not sure if it has anything to do with their HD testing.

The source of the Morse is Cuba. Here's an entry from Jim Hawkins WMCA 570 Transmitter Page which will explain what you heard: "The Spanish-language station with the time pips and Morse "RR" identifier on 570 is CMHI, Radio Reloj, in Santa Clara, Cuba. Radio Reloj is Cuba's national time-standard station and is based in Havana. It has transmitters all over the island...its Havana outlet is on 760 (CMCD). The format of Radio Reloj consists of two announcers taking turns reading news with time pips superimposed. Time checks are given on the minute, followed by a brief time tone and the "RR" sounder. There are no commercials."

It also has a signal on 950 as well..can be heard outside of KPRC's night pattern during critical hours.

Thanks for helping me with the mystery - that has been running me crazy. Next time I leave KLIF's service area I'll have to try to listen for the signal some evening.

Won't be sending a QSL to them however. Many moons ago I sent one to Radio Cuba (along with many other countries) as a kid & they sent me a card along with a questionnaire for my views & to learn their "culture." Return questionnaire & they will send more as a mini-course. That promptly went in the trash, I just wanted their card.

After I moved to DFW I sent another QSL as a goof, and they replied "are you the same (name) that lived in (old hometown?) We received a QSL 11 years ago from someone with your same name but never got a response.

Keep in mind this was before internet. That's creepy.

This has always drove me crazy too. I used to go to a pretty remote island in the Bahamas and because there was no TV I would try to pick up S. Florida stattions to past the time at night. The RR booms all across the low end of the dial.
