KLIF 570 now in IBOC

And its sidebands put digital hash on KLBJ 590 - which was previously as clear as a local. I can't wait until KLBJ retaliates by firing up IBOC. They are unlikely to be much affected in their listening area by KLIF sidebands, as their listening area is geographically small. But the same can't be said for KLIF - when the metroplex is 100 miles East to West and 70 miled North to South. A sizable portion of the metroplex will definitely hear KLBJ sidebands and therefore tune out KLIF.

Bring on - the JAMMING WARS!!!

I welcome this way, it'll give me something better to listen to than "all fox news, all day".

Is the IBOC still on? Hearing KLIF in Houston as usual, but no sign of the digital sidebands here, as of a 1pm check. No problems with reception of KTSA/KLVI/XEMU/KTBC (550/560/580/590.)

It MUST be off, because 570 is a monster even in Houston. I was about to post on the Houston board if anybody had problems with KLVI. Now THAT would be an issue because they really are a local down there - and show up in the ratings even though it is licensed to Beaumont and I suppose still broadcasts out of Beaumont. Only 80 miles away, a lower band 5 kW is a monster signal to neighboring towns. I remember they would start jamming KLIF (then WFAA 570) as far north as Huntsville. That was in the days when WFAA 570 was music - and had a REASON to be in stereo.

Emmis-Austin has a few HD's on FM, so 590 KLBJ is probably on the way.

Should make for some tough listening in Waco for anyone tuning in KLIF or KLBJ.

Yikes! Boy, did I have a flashback. Of course I meant KLBJ on 590, not KTBC. Having grown up in Austin in the 60's, I still sometimes have the old calls stuck in my head. I had been referring to them in an "old stations" thread on another board.

I just answered my own question. KLIF sidebands are a MONSTER down in Galveston! Much louder than their primary analog signal, and clearly audible in the background of KLVI. Sidebands were as strong as local signals. They obliterate a distant 580 - but who cares --- For the heck of it, I tuned around some other IBOC signals - and found the same effect from WOAI sidebands - much louder than their primary analog portion. This was the case on my car radio as well as a well aligned GE SR-3. The saltwater effect was bringing in isolated IBOC in pairs from more distant stations - stations that I couldn't even hear the analog portion of. The entire AM band had considerably more ambient noise on it than I observed even a year ago. I suspect aggregate IBOC sideband noise - as there were no sources of manmade interference anywhere around.

If they EVER cut this stuff loose at night, we are going to lose the entire AM band to IBOC noise! I was alarmed at just how much louder the digital sidebands are at great distance from the stations. We could well lose the AM band world-wide at these noise levels!
