KLIV/1590 Job Opportunities

Bob Kieve, the owner of KLIV/1590 in San Jose (and one of my favorite people in the business), noted in ba.broadcast that the station has two part-time jobs open right now:

Reporter/Announcer (Part-Time)

1590 KLIV has an immediate opening for a part-time reporter and announcer for our local news operation. This position requires working weekends and holidays. Availability for weekday, evening and overnight fill-in work is also required.

Job requirements include the ability to quickly and accurately report local news and perform on-air news anchoring duties in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will have a polished on-air delivery, strong news writing and reporting skills, audio editing skills, and will be familiar with the process of gathering and reporting the news. Previous broadcast news experience is highly desirable, however we will consider applications from advanced college students, recent graduates and others seeking an entry-level position. We are especially interested in applicants familiar with the news, politics and issues of Silicon Valley.

1590 KLIV is a 24/7 all-news station serving San Jose and Silicon Valley. We are an affiliate of CNN and provide a mix of network and local news with a strong focus on the news of the communities that make up Silicon Valley.

Interested applicants should mail a letter of interest, resume, writing samples and audiocassette or CD (no videotapes please) to:

George Sampson
News/Program Director
KLIV
750 Story Road
San Jose, CA. 95122
Or email application materials, including MP3, to: George Sampson

No phone calls please.
Position will remain open until filled.

Traffic Reporter/Board Op (Part-Time)

1590 KLIV has an immediate opening for a part-time traffic reporter/announcer/board operator for our local news operation. KLIV offers Silicon Valley’s most complete and accurate traffic coverage, with reports 8 times per hour 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. This position requires working weekends, evenings and holidays. Availability for overnight work is also required.

Job requirements include the ability to gather traffic information from on-line sources, constantly monitor telephones and police scanners, quickly and accurately report local traffic conditions within a structured format. The successful candidate will have a good on-air delivery, and the ability to run an audio control board. Previous radio experience is desirable, but we will consider entry-level or college radio experience. Strong familiarity with the streets, roads, freeways and mass transit systems of Santa Clara County is a plus.

I thought KLIV is owned by Empire Broadcastig. I remember when KLIV was a Rock' n Roll station.

Bob Kieve is Empire Broadcasting. He bought KLIV in July 1967.

What KYA and KFRC were to listeners in San Francisco back in the 1960s, KLIV was to those of us growing up in the Southbay and southern Alameda County.

So were Gary Seger, Ross MacGowan (now on the KTVU Morning News; previously on Channel 5's "People Are Talking"), John Lester (later a KGO newsman), Grant Plummer, Ray Morris, Mac McGregor, Ray Morgan, Captain Mikey (Mikel Hunter Herrington), Dave "The Duke" Sholin, Ralph Koal, Joe Ike, Bob Ray, John McLeod and Squeaky Martin.

A great Gary Seger aircheck from KLIV in 1967 may be enjoyed at:

It was a good station, though I remember that the songs were speeded up significantly. If you tuned back and forth between KFRC, KYA and KLIV, the difference was very noticeable. Laradio.com did an interesting bio of Bob Ray a couple of months ago

L, I think your memory may not be correct. I have listened to dozens of complete airchecks from KLIV from 1965 to the late 1970s, and their playing speed was fairly consistent to the original recording speed, as was KFRC.

On the other hand, KYA slooooowed down *many* of their records in the 1964 to 1969 period. Don't believe me? Check out some of the KYA broadcast recordings on the museum website.

For awhile in the early 70s, I had an afternoon delivery job and would tune in Bob Ray. I remember their other jocks too. But it's possible I'm wrong about the sped-up song thing, and am confusing them with some other top 40 station of the era. It wouldn't be the first time my memory failed...
QUESTION - why would a station (KYA) SLOW down the songs?? I can understand speeding them up - keep people hyped up and the energy level high...slip in an extra commercial now and then. But slowing them down seems kind of stupid.

It makes no sense to me at all. At first, I thought it was a problem with the aircheck recordings, so we increased the pitch and the jocks sounded like The Chipmunks. When you know what guys like Tom Campbell, Sean O'Callaghan, Chris Edwards and Johnny Holliday sound like, you also know what they should NOT sound like.

In the broadcast recordings, the commercials sound right, the jingles sound right, the newscasts sound right, the jocks sound right ... and the records sound like they are running at about 42 instead of 45.

If you are under 25 years old, the last part of that last sentence probably meant nothing to you.
