And he had been furloughed in late March, when advertising collapsed, as was the other jock mentioned, Gary Moore. So all the station was doing was telling both that it's getting leaner and meaner and will not be bringing them back from their furloughs, which turned out to be delayed terminations.

And remember, that besides his radio stations being off by 50% or more in revenue, Meruello is significantly invested in Las Vegas hotels and casinos which have zero income now.

Turns out that Meruelo Media is making cuts to the LA Cluster.

Also departing KLOS are weekendsers Frazer Smith and Jim Daniels. Missing from the station’s website, but whose exits are unconfirmed are evening host Greg Beharrell and The Sex Pistol’s Steve Jones, whose “Jonesy’s Jukebox” aired Fridays at noon.

At Spanish Rhythmic “Cali 93.9” KLLI, Jessica Flores has exited as evening host. Flores joined KLLI as part of its first morning show last September and moved to evenings in January. Flores previously worked as a producer and host at KPWR and on-air at Radio Disney. She is a singer/songwriter and social influencer and previously served as Music and Entertainment Partnerships Manager for Latin America for Musical.ly (now Tik Tok).

We have not confirmed any cuts at Classic Hip-Hop 93.5 KDAY or Rhythmic CHR “Power 106” KPWR.

KLOS may be more vulnerable with the recent layoffs. A station in the spirit of The Sound could potentially appeal to their current audience.
Please refresh my memory; how did The Sound perform in the ratings when they were around?

What does that have to do with KLOS?

If Entercom were to resurrect The Sound on 97.1, it would be a direct competitor to KLOS and would probably cause the station to lose quite a bit of its AQH share. For nearly all of the past 25 years, L.A. has had two classic rock or heavily classic rock leaning stations at the same time.

True, when 100.3 The Sound was still on the air and 95.5 KLOS was still in Cumulus' hands, the combined billing of the two stations was mediocre. There were other factors in play than merely format/ratings, though.

Those "other factors" have not improved. The fact that Meruelo is cutting costs at KLOS indicates that billing is weak.

Interesting...here's the referenced article from Inside Radio:

Format change in the works?

If so, could that lead to classic rock at one of the Entercom stations?

As we've said, there's no room for two classic rockers. KROQ has gone modern rock. So that leaves AMP.

KROQ has been "modern rock"/alternative since the format's inception in 1988, and honestly for at least 8 or 9 years beforehand. What has changed is that it switched from leaning classic alternative to leaning pop alternative.

Both The Sound and KLOS were splitting each other and, thus fragmenting a small audience group. Looking at the end of 2018 to early 2019 KLOS was around 12th to 13th, while The Sound was around 25th. The total shares were in the 3.7 range.

Today, without The Sound, KLOS still has around 2.5 shares (prior to Covid). It's a shrinking audience.

I would also say a re-launch of The Sound on 97.1 would impact Jack FM.

If Entercom does flip 97.1, it would be for a format with high revenue potential. News-talk, sports talk or classic hip-hop may be worth a try.

Classic hip hop is already done in LA on one of t he Meruelo stations; while a Class A, it covers well the areas where the format is going to get 90% of its cume.

News/talk has two disadvantages. First, the format is increasingly 55+ as the audience matures and is not replaced by younger listeners, FM or not.

Sports depends on team affiliation here. Most revenue is driven by that.

If KLOS does flip they should try Classic hits and go up agaisnt K-earth

Why would KLOS flip at this point? They are at a decent billing level and have a unique format to present to advertisers.

They could possibly get higher billing.
Just my 2 cents.

Classic Hits is an easier sale than Classic Rock.

The Meruelo station is pretty much a stand-alone for sales, while the former CBS cluster has group sales synergy. Trying to compete against the Entercom cluster sales synergy would be a big loss.
