KLOS: Coburn to Middays; Maxx to Nights

KLOS shuffles its lineup again -or- rearranges the deck chairs on the Titanic, if you prefer.

After moving Melissa Maxx from nights to middays back in September 2014 (when Derek Madden left that shift to concentrate on PD duties),
Maxx moves back to the 7PM-Midnight ("Rock On Demand") slot while weekender (and longtime KLOS veteran) Bob Coburn takes over middays (10AM-2PM).

Changes are effective Monday, April 6, 2015.

Melissa Maxx's real name is Melissa Teper. She spent nine years at WBCN in Boston and was an executive producer and VJ of the Attitude mobile video channel. She's been at KLOS since 2010. And who is she replacing in evenings? Is it Gary Moore? If only we could find somebody who still listens to KLOS!

What happened to the night Jock?
You left out who the night Jock was that Melissa Maxx is replacing.

KLOS itself did not make any mention in its press release, which is why that fact has been missing in news reports.

File this one under "What's Old is New Again"

Bob Coburn used to hold down the mid-day shift at KLOS in the 80s as well. Around the '87-'88 period, and maybe for some time after that, he had a show called "Noontime Nuggets" where they would actually dig into the library a little bit and play some stuff that was not on the 500 song playlist (Just imagine it!); usually oldies from the 60's that might not otherwise fit the entrenched AOR format like the Searchers or some R&B stuff, plus lesser played songs from 60's rock groups like Cream, The Guess Who, the Zombies, and the like.

I am sure that ultimately cost some PD their job, but with the lack of available listening options that we had then as compared to now, it was something of a Godsend not to hear the same old songs for at least an hour a day. I would bring my Walkman (complete with cassette deck!) and headphones to school to be able to hear it at lunch. Good Times!

No Variety...

Melissa and I go back and forth on Facebook about KLOS' inability to play any deep tracks and that the frequency of certain songs is making me want to go nuts...They play Blinded by the light by Manferd Mann twice daily about 4-5 a week, sometimes at nearly the same time of the day...she claims that it is requested....but they do this with others songs as well some don't make me want to vomit like BBTL. They need deeper cuts...I'm not a dedicated KLOS listener...it is just one because I listen to Heidi and Frank in the morning and I am too lazy to change the station to something that plays a better variety. I keep telling them the beauty of the format is how many songs you could play...

KRTH and KOLA and many other former 1960s-70s oldies stations have evolved into 1970s-80s classic hits and several such stations also play 1990s. KLOS is still considered a "dinosaur" because the playlist in 2015 is pretty much the same as it was in 2005...and 1995...and 1985. Isn't it time for KLOS to focus on 1980s-90s or even 1980s-90s-2000s and retire Kashmir, Freebird, Paranoid, Dream On, Hotel California, Back In Black, Free Ride, Tom Sawyer, Comfortably Numb, Sweet Home Alabama and all the hundreds of other songs which have been played to death since the '70s? Or maybe KLOS likes having an audience that is predominantly men in their 50s and 60s. :)

Funny how KLOS is being called The Titanic. The latest 6+ shows KSWD The Sound has almost twice the listenership of KLOS. The gap between the two stations keeps getting bigger and bigger.
